I actually like the added depth that the morale system offers. It needs fine-tuning and I'd like to also see the 2-hole in the batting order added as a "star" position based on more recent trends. But all things be equal, it is a simple (yet effective) means of displaying player morale without devoting a boring, convoluted mini-game around it.

it's a feature that was tossed in (like many features) to sell more games because it sounded splashy when used as a marketing tool. And then they proceeded to do nothing with it since. it's been broken but they never touch it.

Such is life in the modern video game era

I'd be surprised to learn someone bought the show because morale is in franchise mode, but wouldn't have bought it otherwise .

Re: Morale in franchise

Honestly I like the idea of morale but the exicution is lacking. The expectations should go like this: Top half of the lineup, everyday, platoon, depth, 40 man and none. I build my lineup new school, and I'm sick and tired of getting penalized for putting my best player in the #2 spot, when in reality they should be perfectly happy with that.

I like the morale concept. It puts life to the players. However, you will pitch where I put you and you will bat where I put you in the lineup. Such is life. You don't always get what you want.
There are players that drop 4-5 points off their overall.

That's a HUGE hit.

They may, but i have not seen it effect averages or gameplay enough to make it matter in my experiences. And that's with both my play franchise and my manage mode franchise.

Franchise SIM is dead. Find your favorite iterations and play it forever. Card games are whats "now" and games will cater in that direction and forget realism.

Just have fun and play :)

I doubt anyone bought it JUST for morale, but it's one of those things you can market a game on. You can't market on "fixing legacy issues." You can market on "streamlining franchise mode" (phases), a morale system where players perform based on satisfaction with contracts, team roles, team success etc., more classic stadiums, more shoes and jerseys, advanced stats like WAR and FIP, etc.

By themselves none of these will probably get someone to buy. But each year you find 3 or 4 splashy things to market as new modes or new features. All yearly games do it. NBA2k has done everything from celebs in all star games to expansion teams, to international players.

So, like I said a few years back someone thought it was a good marketing tool to sell "morale" as part of the game. They then proceeded to not do it well and then never touch it again.
