Working the count.

It may just be me overanalyzing, but over the last 5-10 games I’m starting to feel like there’s an actual, kind of under-the-hood, benefit to hitting with deeper counts as opposed to first-pitch swinging or hitting early in counts.

It seems that, especially when I have runners in scoring position, if I swing and make contact on the first pitch or in an early count it’s almost a guaranteed out. However, if I work the count full or work it to my favor, my chance of getting a hit increases dramatically.

Obviously, this would make some sense in real life, but in The Show I’m saying I feel like there’s an actual hidden attribute boost. I wonder if this has ever been mentioned and I missed it.

I dunno, something else that SDS has secretly enabled in the game? I'm sort of glad that I don't over analyze this game. I've never once felt that there's some hidden mystery to this game. There's levels, sliders, a wealth of attributes and most importantly the way a gamer goes about the game on a daily basis.

I don't know that there is an attribute boost for working the count, as I've had success hitting with runners on, swinging at the first pitch, 2nd pitch, 8th pitch, etc....over my time with the game this year.

I think the biggest benefit is that, just as in real life, when working the count you're more likely to get a mistake pitch from the pitcher (meatball, hanger, cement mixer) that you can square up and hit hard some where. Sure you can get that mistake pitch on the first pitch of the AB but typically not as the pitcher will be looking to work an edge somewhere in the zone in an attempt to get an over aggressive hitter to swing at a bad pitch and get himself out.

I think this has been the case for a very long time on the show. There are lots of things that go into it. Pitcher stamina and pitcher confidence being two huge parts. I dont necessarily think you get a boost deep in the count, other than with Unfazed quirk with 2 strikes gets bigger PCI. I do think swinging at 1st pitch, unless it is a clear mistake pitch, or you have 1st pitch quirk, is a bad idea. Usually because 1 pitch outs seem to boost pitchers confidence and of course keeps pitchers stamina up.

well, its been my experience that if I work the count theres a better chance to get a pitch that's down the middle because he missed his spot. also the more pitches I see, the easier it becomes to identify what he's throwing and I get used to his delivery. If you get up there alwaysfirst pitch hacking, the CPU is going to pick up on that and throw you junk because it can count on you to put yourself in a hole.

I'm a hacker and make lots of first pitch outs, but most of them seem to be on pitcher's pitches. If I had the ability to identify a good pitch to swing at, I'd expect a lot more success

The in-game announcers actually hint that this is the case. They mention things like "the deeper this count goes the more of advantage the hitter has". They mention some other things through the broadcast that are kind of unwritten rules of baseball, or general tendencies; i.e. and paraphrasing, "there is a power hitter at the plate in a hitters count, if the ball is in your wheelhouse let it fly" (power swing).

Little comments like these tend to make me think that there are "under the hood" logic at play that give boosts in certain counts.

Also, the fact that there is a Quirk for First Pitch Hitters also indicates that first pitch swinging is not ideal for hitters who do not have that Quirk.

With all that being said, I think this is all in-line with what we expect in real life. Most hitters do not swing on first pitch and the ones that do are well known. Getting deeper into counts is usually a sign of a good hitter...

So I think the game, in this aspect, works the way it should.

I'm not sure it's anything under the hood, I just think that it happens to be that the more of something you see, the more likely you'll get good results. It doesn't even have to be video games or baseball. It could be something as simple as your commute to work. You make that trip enough times you know what to expect. Over time you gradually shave minutes off from when you first started. And back to the Show, you're not guaranteed good results just because you go deep in the count. I can work the count full , foul off 3 or 4 pitches, my brother comes in the room and I hand him the controller so I can finish my sammich, he's striking out 9 times out of 10. Yeah, he stinks at baseball but he ain't heavy, he's my brother.
