That actually might be an OLED issue, look up ABL issues. It's a limitation on the OLED technology that can't be turned off.

Yeah, Oleds are not the best choice for HDR. LCD is still the way to go, especially when they have a lot of local dimming zones to enhance the contrast ratio.

Re: HDR on or Off?

I have an LG Oled C7 and no problems during night games for me.

Quite the opposite. OLEDs have much better contrast. The advantage a good LCD has is it can get much brighter which is usually important since most gamers play in lit rooms. In the dark, OLED is more impactful HDR performance.

That's what I was getting at, Oleds do not meet the HDR standard you can get from LCDs due to weak peak nits.

The HDR standard is a litany of poor planning and forethought anyways, and should probably get ignored. You can get the best rating possible with only 2 lighting zones. Makes the standard completely and utterly useless when it comes to measuring the quality of a TVs HDR implementation. At least with OLED you know that pixels are self-illuminating.

Honestly it's a toss up between OLED and LCD as to which is better. It's more the room you are using it in and what you are using it for. Gamers want faster framerates, and faster pixel response times, so yeah in general they are more likely to be happier with a non-OLED display.

OLEDs are also a bad choice for gamers due to the chance that HUD elements can burn into the screen.

Still pisses me off to this day that plasma died despite being the superior technology just because the first generation had burn in issues and it killed the brand. We are now several generations into OLED with its burn in issues and it's still an industry leader. WTF.

My old 2nd gen plasma lasted for 12 years before any burn in BTW.

You missed the point but oh well. They do meet the HDR standard, and like I said their contrast is infinitely better due to perfect black levels.

Re: HDR on or Off?

The trade offs for gaming are not worth getting an OLED. Burn in being the biggest issue, which impacts gaming greatly. Black crushing is another common OLED issue, losing detail in darker scenes. And as I have pointed out, they cannot get close to the peak brightness of LCDs. Not worth their price point, especially if you game on it often.
