Scoring help!!

If someone can explain this one....

Lead off batter hits a fly ball to center, CF'er botches the ball scored an error leaving the batter on 3rd
Next 2 batters strike out
Next batter doubles in runner from 3rd
Next batter Homer
Next batter ground out

Pitching line was 2 hits 3 run and 0 earned

Shouldn't that be 2 earned runs and not 0??

Re: Scoring help!!

No. All runs scored after an inning should have been over are considered unearned.

Re: Scoring help!!

Doesn't matter. If a combination of outs and errors in an inning would be enough to retire the side, any runs scored past that point are unearned. It's all up to the scorer on how they would judge it.

I kinda see your point... so even if the inning started with an error and 2 strike outs, followed by say 7 home runs just for fun. . It would still be unearned because the side should have bee retired??

Re: Scoring help!!

Yep. By the letter of the law that is how it would be scored. Even take the example if there are two outs and a batter hits a pop foul that is dropped and deemed an error and then goes deep on the next pitch, that run will be scored as unearned along with any other scoring after that. And to take that even further even if there were no outs his home run would be scored as unearned.

Yeah I am aware of those scenarios, I was just unsure because the lead off fly ball lead to an error and the runs came after... but thanks for the help man
