September Call Ups

How do September call ups work with regards to minor league options? If I want to call a player up in September, but want them back in the minors for the following season, do I have to use one of their 3 options?

I also saw somewhere that the rules are changing but didn't fully understand how. Is the rule tangibly changing or is it more of a technical adjustment that won't have too much practical bearing on an organisation's operations?

Although the call ups rules have changed I'm still under the impression in the game you can't expand until the minor league season is over and I'm not sure then why you'd call someone up then send them down. in the off season if they are on the 40 man roster they'll get called up in spring training, then if you send them down they'll use an option at that time. They don't use options in the game (at least in the versions I've played) during the off season.

I don't think they use an option if you make the playoffs and one of your call ups isn't selected to your post season roster. Not completely sure about that though.

You can call them up for September without using an option for that year.

However next year you will either have to use an option if they don't make the 26 man MLB roster or risk sending them through waivers by removing them from the 40 man roster. That option will count towards next year though, in its entirety.

There is no consequence for keeping a player off the post-season roster. Options only matter for the regular season. As long as the player stays on the roster until the end of the regular season they will not use up an option for this year.

Thanks for the replies! Just one small clarification - once I've used a player's option, I can keep sending them to and from the minors during the same regular season that I exercised that option. Is that correct?

That is correct. The option is good for the whole season.
