SGO - MLB The Show 21 Review

    https://www.sportsgamersonline.com/n...how-21-review/

    Solid and accurate review.

Should have built the game from the ground up for next gen. Mistake imo. Your thoughts?

Re: SGO - MLB The Show 21 Review

Has some good points but a few things.

It bothers me so much when reviewers don't know what their due diligence should have told them. If you are going to write a review you should know that SOTS is missing. If you don't even mention that in your "whats missing" section, I gotta be honest it detracts from me believing you have played or researched enough to support the validity of your review.

That being said, most points are fair and accurate. I would challenge the statement that stadium creator is more than anyone could hope. Its good but a lot of people are struggling with some of its shortcomings.

Lastly, I really disagree with the "ground up" philosophy. I would way rather have this version then the stripped down, basically no modes versions of first next gen iterations that used to happen. A game can look and play nice but with no modes the replay value is terrible. I don't want to go back to that.

I’m not trying to get banned but man how are we continuing to allow this game to have no innovation. We criticize madden so much, but this game barely tries anything new at all.

The big difference is madden is awful. The show is very tight gameplay wise. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. And the new pitching mechanic is very innovative and gives new life to the game. I’m not blindly defending it. I skipped it the past few years, but it’s def a very good game.

SDS have definitely chosen the "if its not broke......." Style of developing. There is validity to your statement. I would argue that pin point pitching is innovation at its finest though. If you don't use it I understand feeling there isn't innovation but out of any show game in recent memory, that with stadium creator, 21 has the most innovation its seen in a while.

Building from the ground up is not always as good as it seems, trust me there would be so much complaining if they did that and had to strip the game down which would almost be inevitable

Innovation is the stadium creator. I'm def no sds apologist, I agree they've skated by barely getting grief but no innovation is not correct.

I get that. And it’s probably neat. But man It’s 2021 and I can’t adjust in the batter box. At least give me a option where I can place my batter. Let me walk in the dug out when I’m not at bat. It’s so much immersion things I wish this game could implement. But I know it will fall on death ears so I don’t bother. I hate Madden but my gawwwd at least they attempt new things lol

k whoa wait what???? The top 2 things on your "innovation" list are to be able to move in the batter box and walk around the dugout? Man I don't think thats ever happening lol

For years I've felt many people here are hypocrites. The hate for Madden is something people always default to. There are 22 players on the field at once that all have to have their own logic. You also can control any of them at any point (besides olinemen). Baseball has nearly no movement besides the brief moments of fielding. It feels like a set of mini games compared to other sports titles where you're almost always moving.

-Players still don't collide in the outfield
                      -No cloth movement
                      -Can't buckle a hitters knees

This was available two generations ago.

Let’s just address the major elephant in the room, the game’s UI is absolutely awful. While it’s fast on the PS5 — which is a great thing — it is visually unappealing and has too many buried elements. It makes searching for what you need a nightmare at times simply due to the fact that you don’t know where things are.
This is one nugget that needs attention by SDS. the whole layout of the menus is just a complete dumpster fire.

Couple of things: 1) multi game moments, you cannot reset it, UNLESS you go through the menus to the moments section and reset. you cant reset it through moments of the player programs(perfect example is the Eric Davis program).

                        2) when you complete a moment through other means it takes you right back to the front DD screen which is annoying.

Right. Also to your point, there's no reason why MLB the Show can't have real time physics & collision detection by now. We shouldn't have base runners clipping completely through a catcher's, 1st baseman, or ball boy's body. I've only had the game a couple days & have already seen a lot of this happening. This type of stuff kills immersion & has to go.

That's not necessarily a UI thing all on its own, that's just a pathing error. While I have always done the Moments through the moments section, I do agree it's weird you can't reset it elsewhere and get routed back to the main menu at times.

I also think the darkness of the menus is a good thing and don't have much trouble navigating them, but I don't think the UI is great or anything.

A ground up rebuild, in one year, during covid?

Do you want a terrible game? Do you want the devs to never see their families?
