While a million is certainly good, I think it's gotta be kind of bitterweet.
Mainstream sports outlets were hyping the hell out of this fight. The powers-that-be at these networks and magazines are largely older people that remember and glorify boxing's golden days, so whenever a semi-big fight happens, they hype it like we're still in those glory days.
And with all that hype, with boxing's most recognizable fighter coming back from retirement, with this being only probably the second major boxing PPV this year, they pulled in 1 million.
That's solid, but not spectacular. I mean, the UFC's been pulling in 500,000-800,000 pretty regularly this year, even with very little help from mainstream sports outlets. And the only time the UFC has gotten any hype from networks even in the ballpark of the PBF fight was for UFC 100, and that card had a reported 1.7 million buys.
So 1,000,000 for the PBF fight is good, but I don't know, just because you get your head above the water a couple times doesn't mean you're not drowning, you know?
