The problem is what other contender who could headline a Fight Night is available in January. Guida and Florian arent. Edgar isnt. Griffin isnt. Sherk is injured. Diaz is really the only person with a name available.

Exactly. Dana and Joe Silva are thinking this. They want someone who fans know to fight the winner of Sanchez/Penn. Guida is known and really popular but there is no guarantee that he gets past Florian. If florian wins, its too soon to give him another shot. So that leaves Maynard....a fighter that casuall MMA fans dont know. Let him beat Diaz on national tv and that helps his notoriety.
