UFC To Add More Weight Classes

Not sure if this has already been discussed so pardon my ignorance if it has.

But I was listening to Opie & Anthony replay this morning and they replayed a show with Joe Rogan as a guest host.
He said that Dana White is looking into adding 2 or 3 more weight classes.

I wonder if this will help, or hurt MMA.
I know it's really hurt boxing. Not sure if it would do the same for MMA.

Re: UFC To Add More Weight Classes

Depends what weight classes they add. Are they going to dilute the classes they have now by adding ones in between? Or are they going to add classes so that they only bring in more talent and level out some things?

I think adding a 195 would dilute the LHW and MW classes and probably not be a good thing. However, adding a Featherweight division could help bring in some new talent in fighters that just aren't really big enough for LW; and they could bring over some big stars from the WEC.

I hope they don't. I think it is perfect the way they have it.

Re: UFC To Add More Weight Classes

He mentioned that they want to have a division specifically for 145 pounders. They felt that there were some excellent fighters that shouldn't compete against 155 guys.

He also said they want to add a weight class for 165 guys.

So they'll probably overhaul all of the weight classes between 145 to 205.

They need to tread careful ground here. Boxing was great when it only had 8 classes. Now there's 17. It's destroyed the sport.

As long as they don't start having 5 or 6 belts per weight division.

I dont believe it. Dana has been saying for years that more weight classes is what killed boxing. He may in the future shut down the WEC and add the lower weight classes.

Agreed.

Until WEC is finished, the lower weight classes will stay there.
