    Owner Mode

    Hey guys,

Who here is still playing owner mode? I have the show for ps 3, but there is just something about owner mode that keeps bringing me back. I guess its because there is more strategy imo. For example, in the show, many or all teams have loose budgets and can bascially sign whom ever they want. I truly enjoy having full control over my budget. I will never dream of signing a guy for over $10 million (especially with a low market team like the Nationals) because I will never get out of the red. You have to truly manage your payroll, your FA signings, your draft, etc. in order to fill out a worthy roster, while staying competitive. Signing guys like Ben Sheets or Pedro Martinez would ruin me financially since I only recieve $39.500 in revenues from the media (and of course, my daily expenses will skyrocket).

I mentioned in another thread that I am 2-9 and have the worst pitching staff in the MLB. If I do not improve by the end of may, I will get rid of my high priced players for some prospects.

Any of you guys still playing? And if so, how are you doing?

Yea, I hear you. It is fun, but many people quit or have to forfeit their franchise because of insufficient funds. I am very careful of who I sign and am very strict about my budget. I guess I am like that because I work for the Quakes and always have to operate within budget. But anyways, if you operate your team carefully, you can turn a healthy profit toward the end of the season, especially if you make the playoffs.

I have ps2 version. But as mentioned, all real contract, budgets, and current managers are in the game.

Well, I have the game modded. Since it is, every single manager is there (such as Ken Macha) and all real life contracts and team budgets are available. Also, they removed Tampa Bay Devil Rays and replaced it with "Rays" along with their new uniforms and a bunch of other stuff. Also, all affiliates have been changed (such as Dodgers).

The trading system is much more complicated. Instead of trading by using "overall" the CPU will now accept/reject trades based on salary, age, overall, and potential. That is why I love this game. I have a difficult time unloading Nick Johnson for decent prospects since I am 3-13 and would like to dump some salary (plus Johnson is pretty much labeled a bust. Good player, but can't stay healthy). I just love the realism.

By the way, you will no longer see players decline once they hit 30 (that was my biggest gripe)

I'm a newbie to MVP... and to the finances of baseball. So let me get this straight.... if you finish in red... meaning you lose money at the end of the year... does that mean ur finished? ur done? Because I started a owners mode with the pirates..and my problem is... I'm always in red because when I have a home series... i make money but as soon as I go on the road.... the expenses end up being much more.

That is not the case. As a matter of fact, you could finish in the red for the first 3 years and you may be ok. Once you start going into $10-15 million in the red, then you may have a problem. That is why you really want to set your own payroll based on your market. I recieve about $39,000 in revenues per day from the media. That is not enough so I have given myself a $45 million payroll. I'm at $52 million right now, but at 3-13, I may have to dump a few guys for some prospects. Like you, everytime I am away, I lose $250,000 per day, but at home make an average of $200,000 in profits.

However, you can take a gamble. You can increase your payroll and obtain elite talent. This is a major gamble because if you do not make the playoffs, you will be in the red for alot longer. If you do make the playoffs, you will no longer have daily expenses so everything you make will be pure profits (which can hit the millions depending on your staduim upgrades). Because of my anemic start, I will not increase payroll as I am already 9 Games from the Mets. Good luck with your Pirates. Owner mode is extremely fun.

                      Re: Owner Mode

Oh, if thats the case... I'll be fine. I don't want to be arrogant or anything but when it comes to actually playing the game itself. I am pretty good even at MVP difficulty. I can even manage to get the lowly Pirates to the playoffs. So I'm pretty sure that over a course of 3 years ...as my team becomes one of the elite teams in the majors( make the playoffs etcc) . That more and more revenue will come in for my team which will ultimately result in positive figures. Thanks for your help. One more question since you seem to know a lot about owner mode. I heard that its best to flucuate ur ticket prices based on the " game impact" #. Some individuals say that if the game impact # is higher than 5... you should increase ticket prices for that game. This makes sense but when it comes to the Pirates... they are considered so bad in the game... that even games vs division rivals like the Cubs are 3 " game impact". So I don't even have that option... so I'm not sure if I should increase ticket prices for those games. I just started a season a few days ago after KG released the 2009 xbox rosters and currently I'm just planning on increasing ticket prices for opening day, and games where I have a promotions. Any ideas?
Also does " game impact" stay the same for the entire year? Meaning if a game in May is labeled a 3, is that locked? or does it have the potential to move up if your team is playing well and gets better?

Well to answer your question, your game impact is not locked. You can view September home games in April and it will show a 3. However, as your season progesses, games become more important, especially when fighting for a division title. You will notice that impacts change. With that answered, yes, you should always increase ticket prices slightly depending on the impact ($5 if the impact is between 5-7 and $10 if it is 8 or more). It is a very good strategic move. I am currently 4-14 and am having a difficult time financially because I do not have money to offer a promotion. I will not give away free tickets because I am struggling both financially and in my division. I decided to keep some of my guys until the trading deadline so I can better evaluate what I will need for the future.

As your team gets better, you can buy stuff for your stadium. I would recommend purchasing concession stands as adding an arcade, batting cage, etc. wont generate any revenues and are highly expensive. Before you purchase those items, make sure you have purchased all available consession and store venues.

Remember, in season 1, be very careful in regards to your payroll. If you do not make the playoffs (which I am in danger of not doing so...10 GB heading into May already) and are in the red, you may struggle to get out. Once you start purchasing consessions and venues to generate more revenue, you may stay in the green for many years. I have a friend who still plays every single game of his franchise and is in year 7 (he plans to play every game until year 30). He made the playoffs only 3 times, but has made some wise financial decisions and is currently at $19 million (in the green). If you have this much money in the bank, you can perhaps compete by outbidding most teams.

Well, with that said, have fun playing owner mode. It is def. the funnest mode of all time imo.

Yes sir. Even last years stats are present in the game. So you will see Cliff Lee with 22 wins and 3 Losses on his stat sheet which is really neat. Let me know if you want the file and I will try and get it for you.
