    Defending Alley-Oops

What's the best way to defend Alley-Oops? Let's say I have a defender who is in the paint and ballhandler is defended. I see another opponent player streaking toward the basket and know situation is ripe for opponent to lob for an oop. What do I do?

Do I stand in front of the basket and try to time my jump with the lob receiver? Do I stand there with hands up? Or do I try to meet the lob receiver prior to the lob and hopefully "stop" him with Intense-D?

Played someone last night who was able to get a lot of alley-oops on me in transition. Still won and also was able to disrupt at least 40% of them later in the game by basically jumping with intent to block the pass/dunk.

Just wondering what best practice is if I have a defender in the paint early on.

    Re: Defending Alley-Oops

Pushing square (steal if you're on xbox) during an alley oop pass jumps up to intercept or swat the alleyoop pass away. I like to sag off the ball handler if I suspect a lob coming and block the pass with my defender. The tricky thing is if the ball handler reads this then they can pop a floater and it will go in with no shot contest. This year alleyoop defense is pretty solid though, sometimes even without a hand up just having someone in the paint will be enough to make the oop dunk miss off the rim.

I stopped throwing alleyoops in traffic for the most part this year and only throw them on the fast break. I am surprised someone was able to get a bunch on you when you had your big man in the paint.

      ^^

what he said works for the most part...but the "easiest" way to stop them is to get in between the straight line path of the receiver and the goal. if you do that they cant jump over you. they wont even attempt to go up for the ball. if you bump them it basically cancels the attempt.

Ah...thanks for this. I think you're describing this as a programmed-in defense command that is tailored to alley-oops when an alley-oop is in progress...kind of like how you hit the same button to complete a putback dunk if you have a guy flying through the air for an offensive board.

I assume you wait until he releases the alley-oop pass and then hit the button? Best place to stand, if one has his choice, is between recipient and basket?

Thanks, too, to Synistr for his suggestion of blocking the path of travel for the intended oop recipient.

I think for most of his alley-oop attempts, my bigs weren't back in the paint yet. It was guard(s) or wing(s). I didn't know the specific command to defend, so he had two or three successful attempts. And then just kept going to it with every fast break. Maybe another six times. Out of those times, think I blocked/disrupted about half.

          Re: Defending Alley-Oops

If your defender is taller or about the same size as the guy receiving the lob pass, X works fine. Bumping the guy receiving the lob pass will work even if that's not the case, but requires you to be precise with the LS. It's easy to run past them this way. But if you bump then, the ball will always fly out of bounds.

oops this year have to be precise. I think they toned them down a bit too much after they were severely overpowered in the first few months of the game. the way they are now are underpowered but still somewhat realistic. your timing and spacing have to be right. the misses are bad though
top flight dunkers miss uncontested ones on a more than acceptable basis.

I agree with Synister, this year alleyoops have really been toned down. Sometimes they are missed wide open with good dunkers and have no business being missed, especially when the passer has the oop passer badge and the finisher has the finisher badge.

For positioning when you hit the steal button it is best to be in between the passer and the receiver, but closer to the receiver. If you are too close to the passer the animation won't work. Yes, just like putbacks, this is an animation specific to denying alley oops.

                Re: Defending Alley-Oops

Hold the B button (take charge) while you're under the rim and the ball will either fly out of bounds or the alley-oop will brick.

I find it funny how much they've nerfed the alley-oops compared to early on in the game's release. I remember at the beginning of the year I would be regularly throwing down half court lobs with players like Derrick Williams over multiple people. Now I don't really throw lobs unless I'm wide open with a great dunker because it will most likely be a brick.
