Yes and no. There were no Amethysts in ROTY and 6MOTY, so those entire collections were lower than the Current (and Dynamic) Amethysts that were out from day one. But there were only four of those and they were insanely priced, so those two collections were pretty compelling still.
That said, totally agree with your point: that the first one or two special packs will, in the grand scheme of the game, be underwhelming.
What's going to be interesting is seeing how the AH economy plays out this year. Last year was crazy, with the cheap MT. Especially on PC. I think I have something like 15 million MT worth of cards (in PC's absurdly inflated terms) in my collection. Didn't spend any real money but a lot of my "startup capital" was earned off of insanely, stupidly profitable flipping that was fueled by ability to buy super cheap MT with real $.
I wonder how it'll be, this year, with the price ceiling on cards. (Which probably can be circumvented on PC, at least, anyway. But, even then, should make it harder to do the transactions necessary to sell cheap cards for tons of MT to the MT sellers.)
And also...how one has to lock collections and not sell one's collection if one wants collection completion rewards. That's a lot of supply getting taken off the table.
