THE LEAGUE PRESEASON ARTICLE #5
The League's Top 10 Busts of the Past Ten Years
10) SG Trey Tripplett/ Duke
Selected: 1st Overall by the Indiana Pacers (2009)
Current Situation: New York Knicks (Averaged 15.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 3 rpg last year)
Why He Belongs on this List: Dreece, if you are reading this, I know you probably disagree with me but hear me out on this one! As a player in the League, Tripplett is definitely a good player. Super athlete that can put on a show and can score. However, when you draft someone at number one, you expect that guy to change your franchise. Trey may have had the potential to be the guy, but he after 8 years he just never was that guy. I struggled with putting him on this list but in the end, I had to include him.
9) PF Tiquan Shields/ Alabama
Selected: 6th Overall by the Indiana Pacers (2008)
Current Situation: Utah Jazz (Averaged 4.7 ppg, 4.1 rpg last year)
Why He Beelongs on this List: Tiquan Shields is a quiet man that caused nightmares for opposing players trying to score on the Crimson Tide. Leading the nation in blocks, it was no surprise to anyone that he brought home DPOY honors and was a lottery pick to the Pacers (Indiana can’t catch a break). Many people were surprised to see him go THAT early in the draft and after a few years, he developed a rep as an above average defender but nothing more. To this day, he is still that guy but in my opinion, definitely not worth that top ten pick.
8) SG Razlico Kovacevic/ Croatia
Selected: 5th Overall by the Atlanta Hawks (2009)
Current Situation: Cleveland Cavaliers (Averaged 7 ppg, 1.4 apg last year)
Why He Belongs on this List: The tall guard out of Croatia (you’ll hear from this country again on this list) was known to many Americans as “RazKo” after former Bulls great Kurtis Holden spoke about him during an interview. When asked if he had seen him play Holden said “Of course. IThat kid can shoot the lights out. I call him RazKo though because that sounds cooler. He’ll thank me when he becomes a star”. Well, you League followers know that didn’t happen. He lasted in Atlanta for three years before they cut him. He bounced around before finding a home in Milwaukee but now, he is just a guy that can come off the bench and knock down some open shots. We expect more from a top five pick.
7) SF Kelenna Davis/ Georgetown
Selected: 6th Overall by the Milwaukee Bucks (2009)
Current Situation: Retired last year (Recorded no stats)
Why He Belongs on this List: Kelenna Davis got a lot of hype coming out of college for being a top tier athlete with a “ton of potential”. I’ll admit that coming in to the 2009 draft, I was one of the guys that hyped him up as a potential star. Although he had some Sportscenter Top 10 plays over the years, he was never a guy that equaled wins. His playing time slowly decreased over the years and although he has always found himself on a roster, it seems to be at the bottom of the bench. Last year he didn’t play at all and decided to end his playing career. He recently accepted a high school head coaching position in Maryland.
6) SF Dobrislav Petrovic/ Croatia
Selected: 9th Overall by the Milwaukee Bucks (2008)
Current Situation: Milwaukee Bucks (Played in only one game recording no stats last year)
Why He Belongs on this List: You say you want some more Croatia in this list… I got the perfect guy for you. Dobrislav Petrovic may be from the same country and league and as RazKo but the two had very different routes to the League. Petrovic was a guy that no one really knew much about but legend has it that he blew the Bucks coaching staff away during work outs. His English was great, he understood the game and he had visible potential. Unfortunately, his game never really translated and he struggled tremendously from day one. To make matters worse, Lawrence Hampton., Maurice Hardaway and Jarvis Martin were all available and went in the top 15 after him. He’s managed to stay with the Bucks for all these years but if last year is any indication, his time in the league will be coming to an end soon.
5) PF Damon Grant/ California
Selected: 4th Overall by the Detroit Pistons (2012)
Current Situation: Orlando Magic (Didn’t Play Last Year)
Why He Belongs on this List: Here is the fist guy on the list that I feel would have had a much different story if it weren’t for trouble with the law. The Pistons thought that they had their big man for the future after the young man from Cali hit the scene. After being drafted at number 4, he had a decent rookie campaign but then he was arrested for domestic abuse. He received no punishment from the team but when the season started, he was arrested again for cocaine possession and having an unregistered firearm. He spent a year out of the League before coming back. He was on the Magic’s roster last year but didn’t see any playing time. I think Grant still has the ability to be a decent player but he is going to have to work hard and stay out of trouble. At the moment, he is a bust in my eyes.
4) C Bashir Abdullah/ Miami
Selected: 2nd Overall by the Utah Jazz (2007)
Current Situation: Golden State Warriors (Averaged 4.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg last year)
Why He Belongs on this List: I hate included guys that got bit by the injury bug but we have to call it like it is. Bashir Abdullah is one of the more disappointing stories on this list but it’s not his fault that his body sucks. The Utah Jazz drafted Abdullah number 2 overall even after missing the last part of his season with knee surgery. He played during the latter part of his rookie year but he just couldn’t seem to play aty the same level as he did in college. He had the size but his movements appeared awkward and he was kept off the court for the next two years. After another knee surgery, it was evident that he wouldn’t live up to his potential. He has found a spot on a great team as a solid contributor but the days of Bashir being a dominant big man ended before he ever became a professional.
3) SG Rahmel Nance/ Seton Hall
Selected: 9th Overall by the Memphis Grizzlies (2010)
Current Situation: Free Agent (Didn’t Play Last Year)
Why He Belongs on this List: With a background in mental health, I have to say that any player that deals with mental illness holds a special place in my heart. Rahmel Nance took Seton Hall on a special kind of Cinderella run in the 2009 – 2010 season. To be honest, his dominance that year made me feel that he could have gone even higher in the draft. So what happened you ask? Well, Nance went missing before it the preseason and no one seemed to have an answer to where he was. Nance was suspended from the team for two months and when he returned, he never stepped on the court. Nance was later diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and struggled with life in general. At this time, basketball became secondary. Nance is currently on medication and made a return to basketball but he currently is a free agent without a team and many GMs are scared to take a chance on him. I hope that he is signed eventually but as a former top 10 pick, he definitely has to be on this list.
2) PF Rykeem Newton/ Connecticut
Selected: 4th Overall by the Dallas Mavericks (2011)
Current Situation: Free Agent (Didn’t Play Last Year)
Why He Belongs on this List: Before I answer that, let me give you a list of players that went after Newton on draft night that I’m sure the Mavs would have been happier with. Shawn Carter, Ahmad Harmon, DeAndre White, Sadiq Jones, Andre Holland, Dominique Campbell, Christian McLain, Markee Jones and probably more that I just don’t feel like naming. Look, Rykeem is a good kid but the simple answer is that athleticism and “star potential” isn’t always the answer. He showed flashes in college but he just never grew as a player. I hope that he can find a home somewhere as a solid contributor but I just never saw what te Mavs and many other GMs saw in him.
1) C Jonathan Battle/ Texas
Selected: 3rd Overall by the Dallas Mavericks (2013)
Current Situation: Retired (Didn’t Play Last Year due to spine injury)
Why he Belongs on this List: Because sometimes injuries just aren’t fair. 2013 had a lot of good players as you saw in our previous article. Unfortunately, Jonathan Battle was not one of them. The Mavs screwed up again as they seriously considered taking Rameek Toole (who went with the next pick to Brooklyn). Ultimately, the Mavs said “you can’t pass on a big man like this”. Bad luck seemed to hit Battle as soon as he cashed that first check. First, a broken wrist kept him out for a large part of his rookie season. The next year, back surgery. After being cut from the team, Battle vowed to make it back better than never happened. Battle was a free agent last year but later announced that he would be retiring due to a spinal injury. Who knows what Battle could have been but right now, he is just a top 3 pick that was wasted.
Which of these stories is the most interesting to you? Are you interested in giving these players a second (or third, or fourth) chance in the league?
