December Update

Week 5
Dec. 3 – Dec. 9

International Player spot light
Giannis Argyros from Greece is not a name many know about for obvious reasons as most International players do not get much press throughout the year. Major colleges have in actively recruited the 7’1” 285 lbs. Center across the nation but he decided not to come state side to attend any University. Argyros is definitely a big body; he is a solid rim protector, great rebounder and has great hands. He is not a huge scorer but is capable of getting buckets down in the post by using his size to his advantage. It is uncertain if the big man will make the leap to the NBA during draft time but he definitely would be a nice centerpiece for teams looking for a big to clog the lanes.

Clutch performance by LSU Freshman guard Orleans Jackson, as he dropped 10 straight points in the final minute and a half including a huge 4-point play that gave LSU the win over Marquette. Jackson would finish the game with 16 points 5 assists and 3 steals. Marquette’s K.J. Hamilton finished with 17 points and 7 rebounds.

Dakari James and name that is not mentioned much, as it should be. Has started to get his name noticed even more by scouts. James has now recorded his 5th straight game with a double-double in dominating fashion. His recent performance was a 21 points and 16 rebound effort in a blowout victory over Colorado 87-63.

Week 6
Dec. 10 – Dec. 16

Louisville’s Sophomore Rasheed Morris will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL this week. Morris was off to a solid start to for the Cardinals producing 9.6 ppg 5.8 rpg and 1.2 bpg while shooting 53% from the field. His contributions will surely be missed for Louisville.

Michael Diggs of Wisconsin will suffer a 3 game suspension after getting into an altercation with a teammate in the locker room, after Wisconsin’s 67-74 loss to Dayton this earlier this week.

After a slower than expected start to the season, USC’s Victor Howard has finally looked comfortable on the court. His recent 3 game span he is averaging 14.6 ppg 8.0 rpg and 2.5 bpg on 55% shooting from the field has been his best stretch thus far this season. USC is sitting no. 9 with a 9-1 record.

The struggles for the Terps continues as they have dropped 3 of their last 5 games. Taurean Davis has been the only shining moment for Maryland this season but he has currently been in a funk as of late shooting from the field and producing at the level most have expected him to do. Let it be known, he has been nursing an injury to his right hand but he continues to play despite the injury.

Week 7
Dec. 17 – Dec. 23

PG Ravon Bell of Boston College went on a tear this week. In a game against Tennessee Bell would knock down 7 3pt shots for on his way to scoring a career high 31 points. Bell is shooting 49% from deep this season, taking at least 7 3 pointers a game.

Treydun Adams the Sophomore SG for Arkansas has been falling on Early Mock Drafts across the board. He started the season as a lottery to mid-1st round pick on preseason mock drafts. However, in recent mock drafts he has slide into a late-1st round to early 2nd round pick. Scouts have been critical of Adams’ not taking advantage of his explosive athleticism by driving to the basket for an easy bucket; instead, he is more likely to pull up off the dribble to take a tough jumper. Another sore spot scouts have taken notice to is his lackluster willingness to play hard on the defensive side of the ball, “He looks lost on defense or he just doesn’t seem engaged and committed to playing D.” One scout had to say about Adams.

Kentucky’s Junior PF Trey Ratliff has record a rather unusual double double this week. Ratliff would post a stat-line of 7 points, 12 rebounds and 11 blocks in Kentucky’s victory over Louisiana Tech. This would mark the first time in Ratliff’s career with Kentucky he would get a double-double in this fashion. When asked about his unusual stat-line after the game and he had this to say, “If I knew I only need 3 more points to score I would have made it a triple double.” (Said while laughing)

Week 8
Dec. 24 – Dec. 30

Tempers flared as Traveon Bryant (So) and Mohammed Paul (Fr) of Illinois was engaged in a shouting match during a timeout. It is unknown what the caused the tension between the two players and Coach Brad Underwood of Illinois only had this to say about the incident, “Nothing to there, you have 2 players that are really passionate about the game and want to win.” Winning cures all as the Illinois was able to pull out a victory 81-78 over Clemson.

Texas A&M’s Rasheed Johnson has really been a fun player to watch this season. The 6’11 241 lbs. Freshman PF has been a huge acquisition for the Aggies, not only in his productivity on the court as he is averaging 12.6 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.2 spg, 2.6 bpg and 49% FG (A stat sheet stuffer) but he is heavily praised for his leadership on and off the court. The Coaching staff also have high praises for how coachable he is and how much work he puts in every practice and every game. “He’s like the ultimate teammate, and he keeps us motivated just in his work ethic and all.” Teammate Alando Mills had to say when asked about Johnson. The Aggies have found themselves No. 17 in the latest rankings with a 10-2 record.

Dee Hemingway makes the news after the Purdue SF put on a heck of a defensive performance in the Boilermakers win over Washington 74-63. Hemingway racked up 5 steals and 3 blocks in this game and held his assignment to under 30% shooting from the floor. He was even effective in guarding Washington’s freshman talent Tyronn Foreman who had a solid night when Hemingway was not switch on him. Just another reason to justify his top 10 position on Mock Drafts across the board.

Week 9
Dec. 31 - Jan. 6

Notre Dame started out conference play with a bang as the No.15 Fighting Irish gave the No. 10 Tar Heels their first blemish of the season. Guard play of Tyson Law (Fr.) and Kyle Burns (Jr.) was stellar all game. Tyson Law would score 10 points, drop a career high 11 assists and 3 steals while Kyle Burns torched the Heels with a 21-point performance to lead all scorers. Tar Heels Jaquan Wilkes (So.) had an off night shooting 3-14 ending the night with a season low 9 points. Christopher Jordan was the only bright spot for the Heels as he led the team with 15 points. Notre Dame would win 78 – 65.

The rich just keep getting richer as the Kansas Jayhawks are continuing to load up on talent for their future as they have received commitments from 5-star recruit G Cordell Beasley Andre Blue and his teammate and best friend 4-Star Recruit G Andre Blue. Kansas is already loaded with guard play in Tyler Monroe (Jr) who most expect to enter the draft at seasons end and DeWayne *Carter* (Fr.) who is having an excellent season coming off the bench. Now with the addition of two players who are no stranger to working with each other on the hardwood is a huge bonus.

James Kelly (Jr.) Fordham put on a passing display this week with a career high 18 assist in Fordham’s victory over La Salle.

Florida’s J.R. Jennings get the play of the week this week. The freshman guard put on a wicked display of ball handling ability as he straight broke down the Missouri defenders with a vicious crossover that sent his man stumbling back, following up with a spin move on the next defender freeing him for a tough contested layup that he would convert after taking contact on the shot, AND One!

January Update

Week 10
Jan. 7 – Jan. 13

Freshman of the Year discussion is heating up and the race is tight in my opinion. Here is my top 5 Freshman thus far this season:

1) Rashard Johnson - Texas A&M - 12.8 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.2 spg, 2.6 bpg and 50% FG
2) Dee Hemingway - Purdue - 15.1 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 2.6 spg, 1.1 bpg
3) Orleans Jackson - LSU - 13.8 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 4.8 apg, 1.5 spg
4) J.R. Jennings - Florida - 11.2 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 5.1 apg, 1.3 spg, 43% 3PT
5) Victor Howard - USC - 13.2 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 2.3 bpg

Now Johnson and Hemingway are definitely interchangeable but I have to give Johnson the edge due the leadership role he takes on. Hemingway no doubt is Purdue's main man so he is by default having to be the leader but Johnson has more talent around him in comparison, yet he still takes on the leadership role and really gets his team motivated not by his play alone. Orleans Jackson has been stellar all season for the Tigers and he has shown he is not afraid of any big moment, in fact he embraces the stage which he has shown with his 3 game winning shots under his belt this season #Fearless. J.R. Jennings comes in at no. 4 on my list, just love this kids style of play kind of Kyrie Irving esque...he is flashy, quick and an excellent shooter from deep....oh yeah and the boy got handles too, his production for Florida has been very solid. Last on the list comes Victor Howard, PF of USC has been great for the Trojans since his slow start to the season, He has been excellent at protecting the rim USC as his 2.3 bpg lands him in the top 10 in blocks plus he produces well on offense. Honorable Mention: There was only had room for 5 on this list but I do have a honorable mention....Tyronn Foreman of Washington gets the honorable mention as he has been red hot the past 2 weeks posting just over 14 ppg, 9 rpg and 2 bpg. The big fella has been a huge asset for Washington this year and kept the Huskies in a good spot with a 12-4 record this season.

So. Greg Strawberry of Central Florida has a huge game this week as he exploded for 38 points at UCF defeated UCONN 72-65. Strawberry has never racked up more than 18 points in his short college career, but on this night he was more than 50% of the teams scoring output as he willed his team to a victory.

An International player has been making some noise on draft big board lately. Luka Vujanic of Serbia has been receiving a lot of press since video highlights of his game have been on display all over social media. Scouts are impressed with Vujanic's athletic ability as it comes in a 6'7 228 lbs build that is NBA ready, he has a solid mid-range jumper and really digs in on defense. Right now he is slotted as a mid to late 1st round pick on draft boards, which does seem like a fitting spot Vujanic.

Week 11
Jan. 14 – Jan. 20

Duke is rolling which should come at no one's surprise, the Blue Devils are still undefeated as we are hitting the middle of January and the usual suspects for their winning ways are none other than DeAndre Dawkins and Brandon Ross. DeAndre Dawkins has been nothing less than spectacular as we all know he is capable of and the scary thing is he continues to grow every year just check out his numbers since entering the college scene. Dawkins has seen his scoring and rebound production go from 16.1 ppg and 9.8 rpg in his Freshman year, 21.7 ppg and 10.9 rpg his Sophomore year and to this point in the season he's averaging 21.6 ppg and 11.4 rpg, that's an average of 19.8 ppg 10.7 rpg for his career at Duke so far which is amazingly consistent production. However, he hasn't been alone in his dominance as he is getting help from another player who has grown into an excellent play-maker in Brandon Ross, who has been with the big fella every step of the way in his development and has grown up right along with the Dawkins as Ross has seen his scoring and assist totals also increase each season. Duke is heavily favored this year to win it all, they have been in this spot many time over the past couple season, maybe the handwork will finally pay off.

Alabama's Jay Foster Jr. has a great game as his 14 points, 8 assists, and 4 steals helped the Crimson Tide skate past Arkansas 68-66. Treydun Adams of Arkansas would be top man in scoring for Arkansas with 16 points in the loss.

One and done??? Indiana's Seth Willis, reportedly is planning on entering this year's NBA draft at seasons end. The 6'5" 220 lbs. SG is averaging 14.3 ppg with 3.4 apg while shooting 44% from the Field and 39% from deep for the Hoosiers. I would like to see him stay another season but he is sitting currently as a mid to late 1st round pick on mock drafts so if he does declare at seasons end it's definitely understandable.

Week 12
Jan. 21 - Jan. 27

No. 4 Florida took on No. 6 Kentucky this week, and what a game to remember as this was a back and forth affair between to powerhouse teams. Florida's J.R. Jennings went bananas for the Gators as he would post a double-double 21 points, 11 assists with 3 steals, all game long the freshman was a load for Kentucky to deal with. However the Wildcats brought their A game as well as Julius Golden would go for 19 pts, 7 rebs, 2 blks, 2 stls. Throughout the game both teams matched each others intensity with neither side holding a lead larger than 7 points. Florida's J.B. Burgess would tally 14 pts 8 rebs and 3 blocks no blocks was more critical than the one he had at the rim against Trey Ratliff....the defensive stopped give Florida the ball for the last shot of the game with Kentucky leading by a point late. Florida on the next possession would run a screen to get Jennings a clear lane to the basket for an easy layup however a great defensive effort by Trey Chapman who would just barely get to Jennings to come up with a great block that would seal the win for Kentucky 83-82.

OJ Bradford (OU) who started out making scouts salivate over his athletic ability, has started to take a step back on draft boards. His athletic ability has kept lots of intrigue but other faults within his game has scouts wondering how good outside his athletic ability he really is. One scout talked about his ability to see the floor, "A lot of questions to be had there, he doesn't see the floor very well and is only an average passer." Another scout knocked Bradford for his less than average shot IQ. Bradford has found his stock slide into the 2nd round on most draft boards.

So good it's scary! The Ohio State Buckeyes have looked as sharpe as a razor all season aside from one loss on their record. They have a combination of talents starting with their PG Tyler McInnis who carries a John Stockton style of play, facilitator on offense and a hound on defense. The all-around player in William Bradley who is having a great season with numbers of 12.1 ppg, 6.5 rpg, and 5.7 apg. Last but not least their offensive big man in Hunter Bazemore who is having his best scoring season at 17.9 ppg. The Buckeyes are looking like a team that will make a deep run come tournament time.

Week 13
Jan. 28 - Feb. 4

Freshman Terrell Goodwin Jr. makes headlines this week as the big man lead Michigan State to a huge victory over rival Michigan 79-70. Goodwin dominated the game with his defense all while contributing on offense. His 13 points, 14 rebounds and 5 blocks was a huge in the win.

SMU's Ulius Landry and Radford's Nick Baker seem to have begun competitive battle of their own. Landry early this week would take to twitter after dropping 38 points to boast that he is the best scorer in college basketball, apparently that didn't sit well with Baker as he would drop 41 the very next night and tweet later that night "Challenge accepted. #TooEasy"
Seems light a rivalry of a different kind has been stirred.

Arizona's Dante Martin has been sensational for the Wildcats in recent games. Martin who has been coming off the bench for most of the season, has seen an uptick in minutes of the last three games and he has made great use of tick on the clock. He has dropped 17+ points in the last 3 games since the increase on 54% FG and 50% from 3PT his best game yet was a 24 point game where he would go 4-4 from 3pt in the wildcats 85-63 blowout over Arizona State. Now that's making the best out of an opportunity.

Top 25 - February 2019

21 Alabama 16-4
22 Memphis 18-3
23 Miami 16-5
24 Michigan State 16-5
25 Illinois 16-5

Biggest Risers

1) #21 Alabama - Up 5 Spots (Prev. Unranked)
Alabama has been an up and down team all year as they began with a couple of non-conference games before falling to Memphis 87-73 at home. They would follow that up with a bad loss vs Eastern Michigan, along with other close games and more losses. Once conference play started up the Crimson Tide found their rhythm and are 8-1 in conference (only loss in conference was to Kentucky). Leadership from Jay Foster Jr. has helped the squad's confidence level and they could be a sleeper come March.

2) #3 Kentucky - Up 3 Spots (Prev. #6)
This is a top team obviously moving up the charts with huge wins against #9 Florida, #17 LSU and #21 Alabama. After Kentucky lost many big pieces from their championship squad it looked like another down year like the 2016-2017 season. It has been pretty much the opposite though. Julius Golden was already a solid player, but he has really shown his potential and is an animal on the court. Trey Chapman who was mostly a bench player in his first 2 years with the Wildcats has also grown out of his shell and can compete with any other top big men in the nation. Kentucky doesn't look like they will be stopped and have a huge shot to be back to back Champs.

3) #8 North Carolina - Up 3 Spots (Prev. #11)
After coming off their first loss of the season to the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame they regrouped and downed #14 Florida Sate at home. Sadly though they had to face #1 Duke and that didn't help their cause. Once again they took an L when playing on the road vs Virginia Tech. Jaquan Wilkes seemed to have enough after that and tore right through an up and coming Miami team and he would give the Tar Heels some life. They took out Georgia Tech and #10 Syracuse on the road to finish off their streak of tough opponents. Their last 3 wins were all dominant and allowed themselves not to fall back in the rankings like other teams after losing steam.

Biggest Fallers

1) #25 Illinois - Down 7 Spots (Prev. #18)
Illinois' program has been on the rise for a couple of years now, but since Ja'Kel Smart went one and done the Fighting Illini have been slowly falling. After dropping 3 of their last 7 games they fell to the bottom of the top 25. After losing to Michigan, #2 Ohio State and Maryland they have a chance to redeem themselves when they take on #12 Purdue next week. They also have another shot at Michigan at the end of the month. If Illinois wants to stay ranked they need Traveon Bryant to be on his A game.

2) #22 Memphis - Down 6 Spots (Prev. #16)
The biggest threat to the power teams this year has been the Mid-Major powerhouse Memphis. After taking down Baylor a couple of weeks into the year it looked like Memphis could be a contender. After the last month it really hasn't looked like that. The Tigers have struggled offensively, just shooting 39% from the field and 29% from behind the arch. Memphis is lucky they escaped with only 2 losses in their 8 games during January. To stay ranked they need to regroup and fix their offensive woes.

3) #19 Notre Dame - Down 5 Spots (Prev. #14)
After December you wouldn't think to see the Irish on this list after their big win against UNC. It seems Notre Dame got a little cocky and took that win for granted as they got smoked by #1 Duke the following week and took L's to #23 Miami and #10 Syracuse along with only winning by 4 to a poor Wake Forest team. Over the passed month Tyson Law seemed to lose focus as he shot 37% and averaged 5 turnovers a game. His shot selections were also not very good causing possesions to be wasted. He needs to step his game up for the Irish to succeed.

February Update[/center][/b]

Week 14
Feb. 5 – Feb. 11

Duke remains undefeated after being tested by rival North Carolina Tar Heels. DeAndre Dawkins posted 13 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks but fouled out late in the 2nd half. Backup Isaiah Ellington came up big for the Blue devils with a 14-point performance adding 8 rebounds. Carolina’s Jaquan Wilkes led all teams with a 24-point effort but missed the game winning shot for Carolina. Duke wins game one in rivalry 78-76.

Scouts around the NBA are taking a hard look at Cincinnati’s Rashard Dixon, a 6’10 240 lbs. Small Forward in a Power Forwards body. Dixon has shown he is very versatile with the ability to play in the post and knockdown the 3-ball and he is capable of handling the ball. His rise up the draft boards has been slow all season but his recent play has been putting him on display.

Tyler Monroe torches West Virginia for a 31-point night leading to an 82-71 victory. Cameron Woods for West Virginia led his team with 18 points and 9 rebounds and a block.

California lands a top 15 recruit this week as California native Jabari Starks has verbally committed to play for the Golden Bears come next season. Starks is a major scorer, with his most defining ability is being able to create his own shot.

Week 15
Feb. 12 – Feb. 18

Freshman Victor Howard has a career night posting 33 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks in USC’s win over Stanford 88 – 80. This marked the first time Howard has eclipsed the 30 point mark this season.

Dee Hemingway the defensive Stalwart for Purdue, remains high on mock drafts as a top 10 selection. Some mocks have him going as high as top 3. Hemingway has made a real name for himself, with his play on both sides of the ball but mainly it’s his defensive skillset that is impressing many NBA scouts.

North Carolina’s Sophomore SG Christopher Jordan has gone on record stating that he plans to return to UNC next season regardless if UNC wins a National title or not. The sophomore has been playing very well this season averaging 10.3 ppg, 2.4 apg and 1.2 spg while shooting 44% from the field and 39% from deep.
Due to an injury riddles season Stanfords Marquis Minor has announced he will br returning next season for another year at Stanford. Minor has missed 14 of the teams 23 games this season. Wise move for the freshmen.

Malcolm Clausen of Memphis will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn meniscus in his right knee. This is a big loss for Memphis as they have been struggling to play consistently as of late. Memphis will miss his presence but are in hopes he can fully recover for the start of next year.

Week 16
Feb. 19 – Feb. 25

Junior Chris Cook of Baylor has put the team on his back of late. The Baylor on the Bubble Bears have been winners of their last 4 games this includes a win over #11 ranked Texas. Cook has played stellar averaging over 19 points per game and just under 12 rebounds over the last 4 contests. Baylor stands with a 18-11 record going into it's final 2 games before conference tournaments tip off.

Cincinnati Freshman C Blake Johnson makes headlines with a play that has the internet buzzing. In the bearcats game against Houston, Johnson would come up with a huge block of a layup where he pinned it with two hands off the backboard, then heave a full court shot that would remarkably bank in at the buzzer to tie the game at the end of regulation. The Bearcats would lose the game in OT unfortunately but the play was definitely one for the ages.

Terrell Goodwin Jr. is a name that hasn't seen any headlines this season but the Michigan State C has been well noticed amongst the scouts in the league. Scouts are impressed with the freshmans polished post game for such a young player. "He's got some of the best footwork I've seen in a long time from a big man, we talking Al Jefferson esque on the low block he is just phenomenal." said one scout. "In a time where basketball has been about the 3 point shot and bigs wanting to stepout from the post, it's refreshing to see a big take pride in punishing players down low, but has nice touch from outside the painted area as well." Another scout had to say of Goodwin's game.

It's not uncommon to see players give early verbal commitments, with that setup it looks like Duke is going to be in for a treat come the 2021 season as they received an verbal from Lance Wallace who is currently a Junior in high school but the 6'9 225 lbs Forward has been racking in national media coverage and attention on another level. Twitter has been buzzing about Wallace all year, and he has been the most viewed prospect on youtube. Duke has got something special to look forward to in the coming years pre Dawkins Era (whenever he decides to declare).

Georgetown's Lamont Crawford expected to miss a couple of weeks for the Hoyas after suffering a sprained ankle in the Hoyas game against Xavier. Crawford went down early in the first half of the game, and would not return. The Hoyas would still end up winning the game 84-70 as QJ Stewart took over PG duties leading to his career high in assists with 8 also while handling the scoring load as usual with 19.

Week 17
Feb. 26 – Mar. 4

Seth Willis and Derrick Watts dominate in Indiana's Win over Dee Hemingway and Purdue. Willis was unconscienous going for 25 pts while shooting 5-7 from downtown. While bigman Derrick Watts racked up 15 points, 11 rebounds with 4 blocks in the 89-73 win over Purdue. Hemingway struggled to score efficiently on this night ending with 13 pts on 4-13 shooting adding 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

Perfection no more! No.1 Ranked Duke Blue Devils have suffered a rare 2 game skid. As they have dropped their final 2 games of the season going into conference tournament play. They was stunned earlier in the week as Florida State lead by Senior Dakari James managed to upset Duke with a put back tip in at the buzzer by James stunning the Blue Devils giving them their first loss of the season. Later in the week Duke would head into Chapel Hill where Duke would blow a 10 point first half lead thanks to a ready hot UNC back court of Jaquan Wilkes (Sophomore) and Christopher Jordan (Sophomore) who would combined for 43 points on the night and was responsible for 11 of the Tar Heels 14 made 3 point shots (most in the second half). Dispite Duke dropping both games the Blue Devils still come out as ACC champions of the Regular season.

Memphis a team that was on a recent skid coming into the month of Feb. has managed to pick up their play over the last 5 games. Freshman Orlando Mayo has been a standout player for Memphis, as he has produced so really solid games in the Tigers 4 game winning streak. Mayo has been shooting over 51% from the field, 39% from deep and 89% from the foul line. His aggressive play has been a much needed spark for a team that seemed to be losing it's composure for over the last month or so.

Ohio State Alumni Lawrence Howard was in attendance for the Buckeyes final game of the regular season against Indiana and boy did they put on a show for their Alum as Ohio State would steamroll Indian 102-81. William Bradley would almost rack up a triple double with a 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists. Tyler McInnis and Hunter Bazemore would both have stellar nights as well for the Buckeyes. Indiana's Seth Willis who earlier this week had a great game shooting the basketball would find the rim extra small on this night as he struggled to find rhythm against the tough buckeye defense. Ohio State would claim Big Ten regular season conference champs in the win and finish the regular season 30-1 and a definite No.1 seed come tournament time.

An Epic Battle ensued in the Pac-12 as 2 of the top freshmen duked it out, Washington's Tyronn Foreman and USC's Victor Howard clashed for the second time this season. In game 1 USC's Victor Howard got the better of Foreman as he lead the Trojans to a 91-78 win over the Huskies. Game 2 between both schools would prove to be everything basketball fans could want. Tyronn Foreman showcased his full skill set in this battle as he put in work in the post scoring 13 first half points with 10 coming in the painted area. Foreman would finish the game with 22 points and 9 rebounds but the Trojans would still prove to be to much for the Huskies as Victor Howard terrorized the Huskies with a 27 point game on 10-13 shooting which lead the Trojans to a 88-84 win.
