NBA 2k State of Historic Teams

NBA 2k Historic Teams Missing

This season, the NBA has been focused on its 75th anniversary all year long. It seems like an easy marketing point, and 2k made sure to capitalize on it, mentioning it in trailers and ads all year long and having Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Dirk Nowitzki, and Kevin Durant as the cover athletes to show history of the game.

Yet, after taking it out of that box, there is nothing special about this 2k to commemorate the 75th anniversary. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to add new historic teams and players into the game.

The new legends we got were Bill Sharman and Paul Arizin, leaving the elusive Reggie Miller and Charles Barkley as the only NBA 75 players not available in any facet of the game (Lenny Wilkens is not on any All-Time team, but is in his respective draft class and MyTeam; the other 73 Top 75 players are available on All-Time teams).

However, we did not get even a single new historic team this year, after not getting any the year prior as well. The halfway-point in NBA history right now is the 1983-84 season, yet there are only 6 available teams prior to this ('65 Celtics, '65 Lakers, '71 Bucks, '71 Lakers, '72 Knicks, '77 76ers).

They are leaving out half the history of the league. In 1997, when the 50 Greatest list came out, they included a Top 10 teams of all time. 2 of those teams (the 1967 76ers and 1983 76ers) have no iteration of themselves in the game at all. The '70 Knicks, '72 Lakers, and '92 Bulls were also selected in the Top 10, but 2k gave us worse iterations of these teams ('72 Knicks, '71 Lakers, and '91 Bulls), showing the lack of awareness in their historic selections.

The '47 Warriors, '51 Royals, 50's Lakers, '55 Nationals, '56 Warriors, '50's Celtics, '58 Hawks, '67 76ers, 70's Celtics, '75 Warriors, '77 Trail Blazers, '78 Bullets, '79 Super Sonics, and '83 76ers are all eras of teams that won championships and aren't included at all.

2k has the rights to so many legends (and many of their teammates) who are not featured on a single historic team (George Mikan, Dolph Schayes, Bill Sharman, Bob Cousy, Paul Arizin, Bob Pettit, Hal Greer, Lenny Wilkens, Nate Thurmond, Billy Cunningham, Rick Barry, Dave Bing, Wes Unseld, Elvin Hayes, Pete Maravich, Dave Cowens, Tiny Archibald, Bob McAdoo, and Moses Malone). Several other players (Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, John Havlicek, Dave DeBusschere, Jerry Lucas, Willis Reed, Earl Monroe, Bill Walton, George Gervin, John Stockton, David Robinson) are on a classic team, but not even close to their primes, as evidenced by very low overalls for the greatest to ever play. 19+11= 30 of the Top 75 are not being given the representation that they deserve.

As it currently stands, James Harden, Damian Lillard, Anthony Davis, and Giannis Antetokounmpo will also fall into the misused category, as none have a prime version in the game ('12 James Harden and all four's current versions are where they stand).

It's extremely disappointing that they have completely neglected most of basketball history when some of the changes are extremely easy fixes. NBA 2k is how a lot of younger basketball fans learn about historic players, and the unfortunate reality is that the unrealistic MyTeam cards are the only understanding of what these players know about the retired greats of the sport.

There are a lot of historic role players who have 99 overall cards in MyTeam, but do not have a realistic representative accessible in other modes. By taking these players into the real rosters, it is pretty easy to create a new slot for some historic teams. Most of the teams are missing players anyway, so even if they could only get 5 players for a given team, they can create a roster slot where the the accurate courts, jerseys, logos, etc. are and roster creators can fill in the missing players if need be.

Below is the full list of teams that I think are worth being in the game. Obviously we will never have access to all of them, but it would be nice to get a few each year, especially some that cover the first 35 years of the NBA's 75 year history.
