NBA 2k23 Off/Def Settings Knowledge Collection

I was watching a video by Da Czar about OTFC Offense and realized once more that we are at a point with the 2k series, where barely anyone has any knowledge about which options actually work and which options do what exactly.

For example in his video he states that as soon as you turn ACE off on offense it means you cannot set the offensive tempo and offensive rebound behavior anymore. And it was like that for years. I was like "wow how can sth like this be for years and nobody actually knows about it if you're not watching a video in 2k23 where the developer states it in a side sentence".

The same when I read the collection of Q&A with Da Czar where he stated that soft hedge results in drop defense. How can anyone know that? The text in the game states "the defender drops down to defend against the drive" for "NO HEDGE" while for "SOFT HEDGE" it states something different. So without any additional knowledge just by looking at the information the game gives us, anyone who wants to achieve drop defense will set the pnr defense to "NO HEDGE".

So maybe it is a good time to just start a collection of knowledge about all the settings in the game to get some kind of database where people can look stuff up. I am talking about all the lets call it gameplan options that we have, so stuff like Coach Settings, the on the fly stuff (shrink the floor, junk, etc.), the defensive settings and so on.

So lets add together our knowledge and discuss it.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

    1. Coach Settings:
ACE: If offense is turned off, Offensive Tempo and Offensive Rebounding (OTF Menu) cannot be changed anymore and will be set to "AUTO".

    2. Offensive Settings

    3. Defensive Settings
On-Ball Coverage: All seem to work.

    Off-Ball Coverage:

    Leave Him: Does not work
Gap, Moderate, Tight: According to alabamarob they do work, though there is only a small difference

    Pick and Roll Handler:
    Go under: works
    Go over: works
    ICE: only works very rarely
Switch: Does not work consistently. Most of the times it has to be triggered by holding "A".

    Pick and Roll Hedge
    No Hedge: ?
Soft Hedge: = Drop defense, though going by the description and basketball theory, it shouldn't be.
    Hard Hedge: ?
    Catch Hedge: ?
    Double: ?

    Force Side: Works as intended

Drive Help Rules: (all seem to work as intended)
Automatic: Does not really mean AUTOMATIC but HELP AND ROTATION (according to Da Czar)*
Help and No Rotation: First help triggers, no rotation afterwards*
No Help: No Helpside, everyone stays with their man

*from my experience the help rotation only triggers as soon as the ballhandler sets a foot inside the paint. So to achieve the earliest rotations possible, "FORCE MIDDLE" will get besser results, as the ballhandler touches the paint earlier than with "FORCE BASELINE".

    Pick and Roll Help Rules
Same as with DRIVE HELP RULES

    Double Team Perimeter:
    Double on Drive: Works*
Double on Catch: Basically works, but only if a players receives a pass in the front half of the court. Meaning a Point Guard won't get doubled until he receives the first pass in the front half.

*basically a good way to make up for bad/slow help side rotation and lack of the "PRE-ROTATE" setting. Somehwat aggressive but you can lock down the paint.

    Pre-Rotate: Does not work

    On the Fly Menu Settings
I basically do not know anything about all these settings. What do they do? Do they work?

    4. Coaching Sliders
    Help Defense: ?

    Really good thread.

    Will be contributing.

    Just as an aside-

For modern day teams, The help defense coach slider is set to 0 by default in error. Czar will go in and correct this when he can.

The off ball Gap, Leave him options are also being looked into.

This is really good to hear. If we have the option back of sagging off of bad shooters it will make things MUCH easier!

Love this thread. Will also contribute.

Would love to get an effective working ICE setting. Would put a lot on the user if you're in the pick and roll and honestly may require some additional animations to make it look right, but would be a nice tool in the tool belt.

I love this thread !!as well I’m actually posting a video in my slider section and will link this thread. Because you like me ,also feel like somethings work and some don’t. But anyway, I will post my defensive settings as well because it does make a big difference in the overall experience of playing the computer. If you take a couple minutes to set up before each game. Obviously, it be nice to have everything working.

Question. In game do the defensive and offensive settings switch back after you apply them to the cpu?

I don't understand why we can't adjust tempo and offensive rebounding if we turn ACE off. Is it built like that on purpose or just something that hasn't been able to be fixed the last few years. I don't know why they'd purposely design it like that.

In my experience, the answer is no, but I only leave a song for myself and the CPU on Office only. So every time I check back on the defensive side with the CPU between quarters and a half time my exact settings are there. I don’t know if there’s a negative affect to doing that, but I’m getting great games against the CPU with my sliders and set up. But maybe I’m wrong I don’t know.

No tempo and rebounds do not work with the OTF menu even if ACE is set to "on".You have to pause your game and go to the offensive settings menu. Even Da_Czar has the same problem, but he doesn't say anything... Watch the video from 8m36 on:

You see him change the tempo using the OTF quick menu, but it stays on auto. Then he goes to the offensive setting menu and there he can change.

                  I reported it here: https://forums.operationsports.com/f...&postcount=145

But I think I explained it wrong. I insist, whether ace = on or off, the quick menu with the pad (OTF) does not work for tempo and rebounds.

The other question to ask is: do these settings offensive/defensive really have an impact on the game. Sometimes I wonder...

You are right that the game lacks pedagogy. But I think the game is mostly too broken (animation, ACE etc another exemple here : https://forums.operationsports.com/f...&postcount=152) for it to be the time for pedagogy.

I was trying to find the setting for Rebounds on a defensive possession.

                    To prevent offensive rebounds
                    Or Run in transition

Do you know which setting does that?

For OTFC defensive and offensive settings to properly work , you need ACE on and both offensive and defensive playcalling set to auto. Offensive settings won't stick visually but the chosen setting will be in effect till you choose a new one.

If you don't set playcall to auto, otfc defensive settings will stick visually but you'll get no real effect.Offensive ones not gonna work either way.

                        3. Defensive Settings
On-Ball Coverage: All seem to work.

Off-Ball Coverage: In my experience the only thing working here is DENY. All the other settings (gap, moderate, tight, leave him) will result in the same behavior meaning the defender defends relatively close to his opponent. Main reason for bad help side rotation.

                        Pick and Roll Handler:
                        Go under: works
                        Go over: works
                        ICE: only works very rarely
Switch: Does not work consistently. Most of the times it has to be triggered by holding "A".

                        Hard Hedge: ?
                        Catch Hedge: ?
                        Double: ?

                        Force Side: Works as intended

Drive Help Rules: (all seem to work as intended)
Automatic: Does not really mean AUTOMATIC but HELP AND ROTATION (according to Da Czar)*
Help and No Rotation: First help triggers, no rotation afterwards*
No Help: No Helpside, everyone stays with their man

*from my experience the help rotation only triggers as soon as the ballhandler sets a foot inside the paint. So to achieve the earliest rotations possible, "FORCE MIDDLE" will get besser results, as the ballhandler touches the paint earlier than with "FORCE BASELINE".

                        Pick and Roll Help Rules
Same as with DRIVE HELP RULES

                        Double Team Perimeter:
                        Double on Drive: Works*
Double on Catch: Basically works, but only if a players receives a pass in the front half of the court. Meaning a Point Guard won't get doubled until he receives the first pass in the front half.

*basically a good way to make up for bad/slow help side rotation and lack of the "PRE-ROTATE" setting. Somehwat aggressive but you can lock down the paint.

                        Pre-Rotate: Does not work

                        On the Fly Menu Settings
I basically do not know anything about all these settings. What do they do? Do they work?

                        4. Coaching Sliders
                        Help Defense: ?
Excellent thread and information. It seems like everything is bugged except on ball defense, and that is the least important of the settings since most of us play on ball defense for ourselves.

Do you know if you need ACE on or off to get any of the defensive settings to work (sans on ball)?

Great thread. I get the sense a lot of these menus include obsolete code possibly from the days OG was working on the game.

I find 'leave them' has worked on occasions. I just did it to Simmons, and there was more of a gap and his defender came to help first on a couple of occasions.

Make sure to turn defensive communication on. I always set my 5 to catch hedge but sometimes the AI calls me to switch at end of shot clock. Only way to know is when I see the speech bubble.

I have found switch to work quite well without pressing A/X.

Doubling off pick and roll works well.

For me, this is the thing which would make the game perfect. Nail these, and man. We good.

well this is one of the problems that has plagued 2k for years and which they refuse to solve together with the lack of fouls, fta and PIP: the lack of a detailed manual on how the various options work, assuming that all are basketball experts. I don't understand why they give you the tools and then don't tell you how to use them, the more the poor description they use does not even do what it indicates. absurd. I have been playing nba2k since 2007 now and every single year we always talk about the same things, every year people fiddling with sliders and rosters and we spend the season doing tests on tests to find the right gameplay up to the new version of the game without having enjoyed it. This is the advantage of being the only basketball game on the market, always offering the usual reheated soup sure that people will eat it anyway. It would take some competition to raise the bar.
