Next year will mark the same point during last generation, where the game dramatically changed, visually. As you can see in the pics below.






Literally everything changed from 2K17 to 2K18. Player models, jerseys, textures, courts, lighting. Etc. (The game is clearly STILL running off the same engine btw)

I also believe that this is the final year of last gen support.

Here’s a glimmer of hope that next year is the year where we finally see change, and 2k finally implements a new graphical engine, and gives us that (true) next gen experience that we’ve all been waiting for.

I was playing 2k20 a few years ago and my girlfriend who doesn’t like video games and barely likes sports walks by next to the tv. And was amazed on how realistic the game looked. She thought it was a real game.

We are really spoiled with how video games look these days.

It looks good. Especially compared to other games on the market. But def not PS3 to PS4 “next gen” . The visual changes this generation have been very subtle overall.

And it’s not because “we’ve reached a point where graphics can only get so much better”

We have yet to experience that true leap because the game is still running off an engine that was introduced in 2017. It’s as simple as that. There is so much that can improve.

By the way, the visual stagnation isn’t just a 2k problem. It’s a problem across all of gaming this generation. Which is why 2k still remains one of the better looking games out there. There aren’t many that have truly been built from the ground up. Everything seems to have just been ported over from last gen.

There was always going to be diminishing returns, as well as tradeoffs being made.

Sure, games can (and eventually will) make a "true" leap but then production costs will continue to rise exorbitantly and development timelines will take even longer. People think 5-7 years is a long time until a game releases? How about 10 years? It's going to continue to get stretched.

Then you consider risk vs reward. Why build a new engine from the ground up, with all new intellectual property and take that massive risk, develop for a long time -- then it flops?

IMO it's understandable to expect more but I think it's not surprising how the industry has ended up like this. This isn't even mentioning that consumers can want different things. Maybe some people think the leap hasn't been realized, yet others are truly impressed by the games released these days. Nobody is really wrong.

I can say one thing for certain though, if the numbers (sales, revenue) keep showing up, then there is little reason for the industry to see big changes. Everything that surrounds gaming in 2023 is far different than it was in the 2000s, as an example.

I do think that next year is the year where most AAA games will go full next gen exclusive. Where at the point where cross gen games are just roster updates and QOL improvements. Like 2k24, only real thing we've heard about last gen is the City change.

Maybe when last gen is dropped, that means more resources are given to current gen. But I agree with the video, visuals have peaked. Unless the art style is changed, all we are going to see is better lighting and textures. I think of Arkham Knight vs Gotham Knights. I think Arkham Knight is actually the better game visually, especially since the only real leg up Gotham Knights has is forcing Ray Tracing. Or us seeing this Remake/Remaster phase with a lot of games that still hold up well today.

My hope is that we see Pro-Play being expanded to all areas on the floors, so we see more smoother realistic animations through all interactions. That we see better atmosphere and sounds. But, visuals aren't a concern for me at all.

The only possible upgrade might be body style technology and that might be on the list of things that might not happen. I believe they will need new tech and that costs and the risks may not weight the benefits to them. I am not expecting a big jump in face scan technology and ProPlay seems to have increased signature movements shots etc.

That’s the main thing that I personally would like to see addressed. A complete overhaul of the body type / skeletal system. Faces are fine. I mainly would like to see more variety in builds. More muscle definition, more accurate legs, shoulders, torsos, better head to body ratio, more realistic jersey physics…etc etc…Also the ability to apply headbands to every single model in game (like back in the day). A change in skin textures would be nice too.

Even worse when you realize it’s not the gaming—it’s the guy. She’ll criticize Joe Blo for his video games, but will subscribe to Gaming Monthly when she finds out that Henry Cavill built his computer for gaming.

But yes: big jump from PS1 to 2, big jump from PS2 to 3, big jump from PS3 to 4, but not as much from PS4 to 5. If you’ve played PGA Tour 2K23, you know that the engine is indeed holding the graphical advancement back.

NBA 2k consistently sees the most year to year additions/improvements out of all major sports titles and it still gets the "finally see some change" treatment.

I'm at the point where I'm content with graphics, where I want to see improvement across all sports titles is AI. We've been having the processing power to see an increase here but by and large game companies are being lazy with developing their AI and consumers are allowing them to

I look at it like this, photo realism is great, but it's the "other" stuff that has always bothered me. The details are what have always engaged me the most. As an example, why are people nostalgic for the mid 00s sports games? It definitely ain't graphics because what we have now is a far cry from any PS2 era title. It's the ESPN weekly recap with Chris Berman from NFL 2k5, the Tony Bruno Radio Show from Madden, the all star weekend from Live 05, etc. that people miss. Current graphics combined with those immersion building features of yesteryear would go a long way towards quelling complaints.
