NBA 2K14 and Beyond - Things that MATTER
I'd like to preface this diatribe by saying that from what I've seen, Next Gen 2K looks phenomenal; from player models, to lighting, the implementation of Ecomotion, it all looks like they advanced leaps and bounds from what we have now, which in my opinion is quite impressive.
With that being said, I feel that most of us on this site would call ourselves sim gamers and the issue that has bothered me most throughout the life of this series(and what keeps me from purchasing a Next Gen system day one) is that in the bit of game-play video that we did see, there still were no improvements regarding off ball fouls. Every year I hold out hope that they'll more effectively implement this extremely important aspect of basketball. They seem to have a lot of basketball down perfectly, but if we're talking about the NBA 'feel' and/or simulation, how has this glaring omission gone on this long without being addressed?
Things such as:
Jostling for position in the post - (They have great animations down low, but the only foul I've ever seen for this was on Tyson Chandler in the 2K12 Demo, I damn near cried, but alas... never to be seen again)
Perimeter contact - blocking fouls that they used to have circa 2K7-9. They even partially fixed this area of the game because of the backcourt/out of bounds glitch. Obviously a main staple of D in 2K is to crowd and bump, I'm fine with that, but NONE except the aforementioned are called fouls. It would open up the game offensively and make it so realistic if you really had to back off of the quicker players
Screens - A higher frequency of the fouls regarding screens(Slower big men not moving their feet while hedging, defenders trying to get around/through them(seen a couple this year), Screeners setting hard screens etc...)
Charges - I added this in, but we all know the issues there. I'd like to wonder for that milisecond which way the call is gonna go!
All of the issues above are situations that you see at least 10-12 times during the course of a game in the NBA. I can't fathom why the effort to add this part of the game has gone untouched, and in comparison to less important aspects of the game, for the most part unnoticed. We complain about logos on socks, headbands, player models, tendencies, sig shots, roster omissions, etc. I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with all of it, it should be in the game, I'm an accessory nut myself. But I feel that at this point going a whole game without worrying at all about your star player getting into foul trouble(Most times even when he has 3 in the first and is still reinserted into the game...another issue, another time) should not be an afterthought. It's a major part of NBA strategy, both offensively AND defensively.
I actually expected the situations above to be added when they went to the 'Simulation' sliders a few years ago, and was elated, but it never was to be. I always hear the saying 'dealbreaker' thrown around, and for any basketball purist/sim gamer, this should be, but it's not, not even for me. I'll still buy 2K every year, I'll still enjoy it IMMENSELY, but as long as these issues are overlooked, the aspect of immersion that I'm truly looking for is just not there. I guess I'll just wait until next year, again...
