Best of 2k Gameplay elements ?

    What's good Simnation family !!!

Listen I wanted to get some non vc the world is ending feedback from simheads on which 2k you guys feel had the best individual gameplay elements for comparison sakes.

So for example I would like to know from you guys especially the old heads around here which 2k had the best...

EDIT also probably best to mention if your talking about online vs offline as well.
    Pick and Roll overall
Pick and roll controls and implementation
    Rebounding
    OnBall defense
    Offball defense
    Passing
    Passing controls
    Dribbler controls
    Dribbler responsiveness
    Dribbler and defender interaction
    Perimeter contact
    Interior contact
    Animations
    Best footplanting( or least sliding)
    Spacing
    Shooting/ Jumpshots (Thanks DaWolf)
And anything else you find relevant to gameplay only. Any explanations on why you think something was the best of the series would be extremely helpful and I am always a fan of video

I haven't played 2K14 ng but to me 2K14 current gen is the best at everything except, Animations and foot planting wich are superior in 2K11. As far as Pick'n'Roll control goes it has never been good.

You where probably looking for some more detailed answers but that's all I got.

I've been playing 2k since 2k9 and this is easily the worst in terms of rebounding and it's not even close.

The lack of boxing out and lack of awareness of where the ball is combined with the long, drawn out and delayed block animations that render your player useless for a few seconds easily makes this the worst 2K as far as rebounding goes.

Re: Best of 2k Gameplay elements ?

I'm new to the forum but i have been following for years. Anyway..

        *Pick and Roll overall

        2k14 is better

        Pros
=best pick and roll screen contact animations.
        Cons
=When the screen is set and works, the player i'm controlling (the ball handler) becomes very slow and sluggish and cant drive hard and fast to the basket for an easy layup.
=often my ai teammate big man will set a screen facing in the wrong direction.
=Also my ai teammate big man will set a screen far from where I'm standing.

*Pick and roll controls and implementation

        2k14 is better

        Pros
= one button to call for screens etc.
        Cons
        = Too fast

        *Rebounding

Rebounding has been bad for years

In 2k14 nextgen the ai always box out and are placed in good positions while my teammates often don't boxout and loose easy rebounds or can't even grab the ball.

        *OnBall defense

2k13 IS better than 2k14 nextgen. In 2k13 the defender felt grounded and it was easier to stay in front of your man and stop him.

In 2k14 it can be hard sometime to stay in front and play D due to the inconsistency in speed and movements. The closer you get into the paint the faster the defender moves left and right which is not right. We need consistency.

        *Offball defense
        I like 2k14 best

        Pros
= Grabbing and contact animations feel and look good.
        Cons
= Sometimes my player get slow for no reason.

        *Passing

        2k14 nextgen is the worst.

        Cons
=bad choices of passes, passes are too slow, players can't even grab a bounce during fast break.
=I see passes thrown to the back of players instead they should be thrown in front of the player during fast break.
Also we need a lob passes button or modifier for the paint.

        *Passing controls

My only big complain would be the lead pass. It doesn't work at all.2k14 lead pass just don't work properly. They get stolen or my player somehow go in the opposite direction closer to a defender. also I can lead pass but my player will get stuck and not move to where i want him to go get the ball.

        *Dribbler controls

2k14 nextgen is the worst because the dribblings, hesitations movements etc are bad. I prefer 2k13 better, simple moves but very useful.

        *Dribbler responsiveness
2k13 had better moves and was a little bit more intuitive which felt responsive.

        Dribbler and defender interaction
2k13 was better. In 2k14 we can't interrupt an animation.

        *Perimeter contact
        2k14 nextgen is the best.

        *Interior contact
        2k14 nextgen is the best.

        *Animations
2k14 nextgen is the best overall.

        Offence
=Nba2k13 ball protection animations was cool. Like doing the one with kobe when you hold the ball away from the defender with one hand.
=Needs more signatures players movements (animations) running and bringing the ball up.

        On defense
We need to be able to interrupt certain animations on defense.
sometimes I feel like I'm glued to the ai defense.

        *Best footplanting( or least sliding)
2k14 is the best but could be improved.

        *Spacing

2k14 is great only after i adjust the sliders.
The problem with spacing in nba2k is the fact that some players leave their assignments for no reason and come crowd an area.
If the players always stick to their man unless they are called for help there will be more spacing and flow to the game.

2k don't listen to their OG fans anymore lol

Re: Best of 2k Gameplay elements ?

          This should be fun...

Pick and Roll overall: 2k14CG The speed of the defender was realistic going over and under, good rotations. Every 2k gives the rollman's defender too much agility and acceleration for recovery tho.

Pick and roll controls and implementation: 2k14CG

          Rebounding:2k11 or 2k14CG

          OnBall defense :2k10

Offball defense: meh 2k14, i can make contact when i want about 60%

          Passing:2k10

          Passing controls: 2K14CG

          Dribbler controls: 2k14

Dribbler responsiveness: 2k11 and 14 CG are neck and neck. 11 gets the nod tho because I can consistently crossover with the left stick at a 45 degree angle. I hate there aren't moves for EACH speed (walk, jog, sprint) and certain moves thrust me forward.

Dribbler and defender interaction: 2k10 But they played too close, always been a 2k issue.

          Perimeter contact: 2k10

Interior contact: 2k14. No 2k game has really gotten it right tho, players can run right to the front of the rim with little resistance.

Animations 2k11. purely for lay-up variety

Best footplanting( or least sliding): meh. 2k14NG i guess. The defense always slides, warps and gets speed boosts to react instead of rotating in anticipation of....

Spacing: 2k14, although things got goofy from time to time ( dumb cuts, not moving to the corner for the angle p&r)

Please add Shooting / Jump Shots. I Really think it was Way better and more responsive and organic in the Old days.

I would say I prefer 2K14-NG's way of doing everything except court spacing, which I feel was best in 2K10.

I do agree with others in saying that passing and rebounding has been bad throughout the series, although 2K10 passing was decent compared to the others. What hampered 2K10's passing, though, is the ease of which to lead passes into the paint for easy buckets. All that really needed to be done to combat this was improving the defensive AI.

                Pick and Roll overall- 2k14
Pick and roll controls and implementation- 2k14
Rebounding- 2k11 ( after this , guards were better than bigs in rebounding)
                OnBall defense- 2k13
Offball defense- ? Dont play it
                Passing- 2k11
                Passing controls 2k13
                Dribbler controls 2k12
                Dribbler responsiveness 2k12
Dribbler and defender interaction 2k14 is HORRIBLE, everyone magnetic.
                Perimeter contact - 2k13
                Interior contact -2k11
                Animations- 2k12
Best footplanting( or least sliding) 2k11 and its not even close
                Spacing- 2k12

the graphics on nextgen are the best thing about it. driving to the paint and doing short 1ft lead passes to bigs is the best way of scoring in the paint for some reason. The gameplay doesnt even require any skill anymore due to the excessive contact layups, BLUE FLASH shooting, players playing way above their ratings and everyone dunking like they are in rucker park

                  Gameplay

Shot success 2K11 was the best out of the box of getting the shot success ratings out the box as close to the NBA. Basically you could get sim stats practically right out the box by just turning to sim settings maybe turn 3pt success to 48 and you were good. You could actually get scores in the 90's routinely, realistically 12 minute quarters.

2K11 had the best animation of sliding to actual movement.

2K11 had the best realistic outcome of forcing your way into the paint. The contact layup success was tuned properly from the latest patch. Now they maybe didn't have enough animations but most of them played out very realistic

2K11 had multiple shot releases for players and varying shot releases windows for the same players

2K14 has the best playbook clearly.

2K11 was the last game where you had to really give up defending the paint vs. giving up the three, without the extra fast closeout. It wasn't perfect though.

2K14 has the best blocking even though some are unrealistic at least it gave you something to combat the offense.

2K9 had that Lockdown trigger for on ball defense was nice that was about the best you had for on ball defense from court to court. If they can add some that plus some stamina play in there that would be nice.

Re: Best of 2k Gameplay elements ?

I'm not gonna give false information because I honestly don't remember older games that well, but 2K8 was my favorite; that being said:

Rebounding I give it to 2K11, lots of offensive and defensive tips which would result in either team fighting to actually grab the board. In 14 if the ball gets tipped in the air chances are you never grab it.

Animations is definitely 11 as well, so many dribble moves layups and dunks in that game.

Off ball D I remember being pretty good at in 2K13, I don't know if it's just bad now or offensive moves are too OP, but I lean towards offense being too easy.

Lots of contact in 2K14 next gen, but not always in a good way. Still feel like one of 2K's weaknesses is being able to replicate realistic contact animations especially because there's a few offenses animations where the ballhandler turbos into you and gets the animation where he just blows right by, or bumps you on d...leaving your guy stumbling for a second while the ballhandler is unaffected.

Honestly as far as almost everything else goes, I feel like 2K14 for 360 and PS3 was as close to a complete experience as we could get. Still a few problems with cheese, but gameplay was pretty near perfect imo.
I don't wanna be Jordan, I don't wanna be Bird or Isiah, I don't wanna be any of those guys.
I want to look in the mirror and say I did it my way.

                        Dear Mr. President,

Had I not had the amount of work I currently do, would have made a much more detailed post, maybe add some vids that I know I have seen here but dont have the time to dig them.

Important note prior responding tho, have played less than a dozen of 2K14 games (next gen, offline, vs users) due to some unexpected real life events. Things may vary as I play more.

                        Pick and Roll overall - 2K14 & 13
Pick and roll controls and implementation - 2K14 & 13
Rebounding - Has never been acceptable, if forced to choose, 2k11
                        OnBall defense - 2K8 & 2K11, undecided
                        Offball defense - 2k8 & 2K11, undecided
Passing - As with rebounding, never been good, but if forced to decide, 2K14
                        Passing controls - 2K14
                        Dribbler controls - 2K14
                        Dribbler responsiveness - 2K11/2K14
                        Dribbler animations variety/uniqueness - 2K11
                        Dribbler and defender interaction - 2K13 & 2K14
                        Perimeter contact - 2K13 & 2K14
                        Interior contact - (2K8 & 2K9)
Blocking (animations, sounds an timing) - 2K8
Best footplanting (or least sliding) - Never been good, but if forced 2K11
Spacing - (2K14 but for streches, 2K11 a bit more consistent)
Shooting / Jumpshots / FTs (animations & timed window release) - a cross of 2K8 & 2K14 would be best (more animations now but more varied releases/windows before)

If I find the time further on, will try and fill in much more properly.

A side question tho, how much of this research would be thinking on a 2K15 possible approach ? I mean, tipically this would have come out sooner for 15, so it wouldnt be uneducated to think that is more a 16 research, am I wrong ? Would love to be wrong, hehehe.

                        P.S:
Better Editing / Customization / Options / Features - 2K11, then again, the few things added on the further installments are welcomed, the things taken out or deminished are not, given next gen prowess, this should have been a focus exponentially expanded

                        ... Had to, hehehe.

Better Editing / Customization / Options / Features - 2K11, then again, the few things added on the further installments are welcomed, the things taken out or deminished are not, given next gen prowess, this should have been a focus exponentially expanded

                            ... Had to, hehehe.
Brother Ffaacc03 I thank you and the others for taking the time. This thread will help to make sure I still have a good understanding of the SimNation's perception of 2k's gameplay attempts over the years.

In this manner my recommendations and suggestions on different things over the next few months can be as consistent as possible (Because we won't all agree on everything) with the hopes of wishes of our community.

With this information as a base I can review the older games and get a good understanding what people felt like was a descent effort , in each area. So that I can maintain that perspective when I'm evaluating the qualities of the new effort.

On the customization front and remember this is just my personal opinion as informed as it may be. I believe they are well aware of the communities desire for more customization and I would think the lack of those options had more to do with them making 2 games last year and being starved for time.

So IMO it was more that, than a creative direction change or an attempt to limit or cater to a particular audience. But that is just my opinion,. You will know for sure come Oct and I hope they deliver.

Customization options require much more time because they are creating all these variables that have potential to crash a game or create bugs that could prove difficult to flesh out especially in a shortened cycle.

What happened to bring able to choose which hand we want to attempt a layup with? This is an example of needed controls that were removed for no reason
