Suggestion for New Defensive Settings in 2K16 - Sam Pham

Edited Copy of my tweets to Da_Czar and ScottOG

@SamPham20: @ScottOGallagher @Da_Czar I was attempting to recreate this year's GSW's heavy switch defence on 2K15. I found the task impossible b/c D.Settings control "how everyone should guard player X", it would be better instead if it controls "how curry should play D" on an individual basis vs any matchup i give him.

Example: Instead of all players on GSW guarding Russ to switch on all "Westbrook screens", it should become Curry "Switch" on ball screens on his matchups and Klay never "switching" on his matchups

We should turn defensive settings to controlling how a GSW player is to Defend his matchup. Not how Player X on OKC should be guarded at all times by anyone.

This will allow a much higher level of defensive scheming and consistency ^_^

Sample of Suggested 2K16 Defensive Settings:

Old system is still kept but Curry/Klay's individual behaviour on how to defend ball screens and play double teams are added in.

**Individual behaviour trumps "How to defend Westbrook" settings. Switches only take place if both defenders involved have SWITCH turned on. If there's a conflict between individual defensive behaviours when guarding screens then Westbrook Settings are adopted.

Westbrook:
On ball pressure Tight
Off ball pressure Tight
Screens: Over
Hedge: Hard Hedge

Curry:
Screens: Switch
Double team: Never

Klay:
Screens: Switch
Double Team: On drives

Bogut:
Screens: Never Switch
Double Team: On drives

This means if Westbrook runs PNR with KD vs Curry and Klay, a switch will take place with Bogut helping on drive. However, if Westbrook runs PNR with Adams vs Klay and Bogut, Klay will chase West over the screen while Bogut hard hedges but Curry stays home and doesn't help.

Hope this makes sense, I am still at the beginning stages of this Individual Defender Defensive Settings Idea. Feel free to add in your thoughts ^_^

PS this also has potential to be modified to apply to off ball screens.
***This is similar to how the Tatics feature was used in Dragon Age 1 + 2 by Bioware.

Re: Suggestion for New Defensive Settings in 2K16 - Sam Pham

Great topic to start.

I've been thinking about how to set up and implement more settings, too.

In terms of defending screens, I'd like there to be some way to adjust based on:

1) who the ball-handler is
2) who the on-ball defender is
3) who the screener is
4) who's defending the screener

For example, if a great shooter is receiving a screen from a traditional big guy with no outside shot, I may want to ice him and have my big hang back in the paint. If his screener is a capable shooter, I do NOT want to ICE him, but instead I may decide I want to switch.

But unfortunately, I haven't been able to think up a simple, intuitive way to lay this out--in a way that wouldn't take 15 minutes to set up before each game.

The other option I'd like to be able to add is to have the big guy defending the screener REALLY stay back, in essence saying "protect the basket, but give up the mid-range," as the Pacer's often do with Hibbert.

I would like an off ball defensive setting of

1) guard goal. This way you could have a cpu big always just camp out to protect the rim. I dont think off ball gap does thst now.

2) leave open. Tell the off ball defender to help on other 4 players and disregard his man

Sam Pham,

I think you have a good idea but I think there needs to be one setting to say what the guy being picked should do and never switch. I like everything but I am not sure what Bogut would do if his man set the pick while Westbrook ran it.

Based on those settings he would hard hedge then double on the drive. This would not be the best setting for Bogut. They need a ICE type setting or something that allows you to play under and never switch

Screens: Play under and ICE contain pick, never switch
Double: On drives

Then they need a setting for non-mobile centers who just play way under and stay in the paint like Hibbert does

Screens: Play under, control paint, never switch
Double: On drives

Also the on ball defender still needs a ICE setting to try to force the direction of the pick. I actually think they need to have the settings coupled to who is running the pick and roll combo but I think that might be too complicated.

We had a thread here awhile back about defending the pick and roll and some of the things we wanted to see. I think most were thinking there should be specific pick and roll strategies specific setting but I actually like where you are going with this

Here is some links where I took some information from which is very useful has about every pick and roll strategy that should be in the game.

http://www.sbnation.com/2014/4/18/56...-playoffs-2014

Here is a specific GSW pick and roll defense example

http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/201...ging-and-speed

I would like to see a setting that says how you defend the individual players in the paint vs. perimeter on ball and off ball.

Re: Suggestion for New Defensive Settings in 2K16 - Sam Pham

Nice post. I've always wanted more settings but I think with the options they've implemented this year 2K has made serious progress. I would love there to be a button to simply force players to switch if it's late in the shot clock as well. Switching bigs on smalls is never good strategy but switching certain matchups is a good way to disrupt an offense.
