How does the salary cap work?

Can someone explain to me how the salary cap works? I don't understand all the stuff about luxury tax and hard cap. I'm trying to figure out if I can resign any of my players and if I will have any money for free agency.

It's very complicated and your best bet is to google it (wikipedia offers a fairly good explanation). Short version though is luxury tax is basically meaningless in 2k. IRL if you go over a certain level you are subject to the luxury tax. Some big market teams or deep pocket owners (Nets, Lakers, Knicks, etc.) don't care. But you won't see the Kings or Twolves ever paying a luxury tax.

You can go over the salary cap to resign your players. You also get a mid-level exception that allows you to sign a guy for approximately 5 million (or use it to sign 2 or 3). You can always sign guys for the minimum salary regardless of your cap situation. The hard cap is the number you can't go over even to resign your own players. For example Detroit could sign a big FA in the offseason, resign Reggie Jackson (restricted free agent) and then give Monroe a max contract and be over the salary cap. However if they do it in reverse order, they would probably not be able to sign a big free agent because Monroe and Jackson would put them over the salary cap (not the hard cap) already. The order you sign guys in is key. But you risk losing your unrestricted free agents if you play a game of chicken and try to sign someone else in hopes of then going over the cap to sign your own free agent.

Hope that helps. Check out wikipedia. Be aware there are rules that 2k doesn't even use such as non-guaranteed contracts, being able to waive a guy and spread their contract over a longer period of time to reduce the cap hit, etc.

This would be great help, but 2k doesn't use the current CBA correctly.

Teams can't offer more than the minimum salary to free agents unless they are under the salary cap, or if the player is already on their team (Bird Rights).

I use the Nets in MyGM and I was wondering why I ran out of funds .... Nets should be able to sign like 5 max players IRL

So if I already have a guy on my team, as long as I have room under the hard cap, I should be able to resign him? For example, I picked up Ray Allen from the free agent list. Will I be able to resign him in the off season?

What if I traded for a player? Do I have the same options for resignING him?
