How to Do a Step-Back Jumper with Consistency

This is my take on how to do a step back jumper consistently with success. Having this as part of your arsenal is essential; 2K defense just too physical at times this is a great counter move to that.

The square button (PS3), x button (Xbox) is the hop gather button. Be sure to HOLD the left thumb stick in a certain direction or you will just hop.

The quote above still works for me on Xbox One.

Huh, I didn't know the square tap animation still work for step back. I know double tapping it would give you a spin fade away jumper this year (Dirk hits this all the time ...). I am gonna try the quote you mentioned, because the way I do it has a delay. It seems your way would be a lot smoother; would be deadly to have both type of step back in hand though. A well timed step back messes up over agressive defenders online real bad; feels great to hit that shot over someone haha Nothing feels more sim than a step back long 2 from Wade ^_^

When you're talking about what direction to press, does this make a difference if you are using absolute or camera relative for the shot stick?

I use a broadcast camera and absolute for the shot stick. Would I always just hit turbo and down?

I guess I could just test, but was curious and won't be able to play for a few days, thanks.

That's not even a stepback though lol, that's more like a dribble back. This is a stepback, https://vine.co/v/euAV9qdJiwY . And this is the game version https://vine.co/v/O3dX2FnHmuD . Your move is more like a pull up / dribble back https://vine.co/v/eBUQgx39jt3

Very inconsistent move for me unfortunately. I get a pump fake a lot of the time after the initial tap.

Just takes some practice...once you get it down, it'll really open up your game. Was messing around with it this morning...

I'm going to have to try this. Which method do you use 24th?

The square + left stick method....once you get it down you can chain all kinds of moves together....

The options doing this are endless and almost always get you an open look, chaining a crossover with the gather is beautiful, the move Sam posted is a retreat dribble not a stepback

Yeah i was trying to describe that move in the pullup vs drive thread bo explained it much more clearly. Its a very vesatile mechanism which can be used going to wards the basket for a more cosistant pul up. Try using it with signature sizeups as well deadly .<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/uwaP_23KLzg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe>

Used to pull off some killer step backs back in '13 when all you had to do was press O (or B). I've spent at least a couple of hours trying to consistently perfect it but to no avail. What works for me is holding down the right stick away from the basket while moving in one direction.

I hear you, wish I could give you some tips but it's just one of those things you'll get or you don't haha...

and yeah, '13 had some smooth step backs
