Re: NBA 2K series just as big as Grand Theft Auto series.

I just want to first say I haven't bought a single GTA ever. Never bought, never played it. But I have purchased several NBA2k basketball games.

OS User Sinner pretty much summed it up. I also thought tsbmolina laid it out perfectly clear in his original post.

You're probably done with this discussion. But why does it matter if they are repeat customers. Repeat customers are still people with money. Money does not discriminate. NBA2k also does not discriminate who the customer is.

Is there a difference if I buy 10 copies of NBA2k16 or ten of your friends each buy a 1 copy of NBA2k16? 10 units sold is 10 units sold; it doesn't matter if they're new or repeat customers.

You even said it yourself. You buy NBA2k every year. The last Grand Theft Auto was GTA5. You bought one (#1) copy of GTA5 only. If you buy NBA2k every year, then you have bought example NBA2k11, NBA2k12, NBA2k13, NBA2k14, NBA2k15 -- that is a total of five (#5) copy of NBA2k basketball games. You yourself have purchase more NBA2k basketball games than a single GTA5 game.

NBA2k10 - I buy 1 copy
NBA2k11 - I am a repeat 2k customer and buy 1 copy.
NBA2k12 - I am a repeat 2k customer and buy 1 copy.
NBA2k13 - I am a repeat 2k customer and buy 1 copy.
NBA2k14 - I am a repeat 2k customer and buy 1 copy.
NBA2k15 - I am a repeat 2k customer and buy 1 copy.
NBA2k16 - I am a repeat 2k customer and buy 1 copy.
Total = 7 copies of NBA2k basketball SOLD!

NBA2k10 - new customer Suzie buys 1 copy
NBA2k11 - new customer Melissa buys 1 copy.
NBA2k12 - new customer Ashley buys 1 copy.
NBA2k13 - new customer Britney buys 1 copy.
NBA2k14 - new customer Ava buys 1 copy.
NBA2k15 - new customer Jessica buys 1 copy.
NBA2k16 - new customer Erin buys 1 copy.
Total = 7 copies of NBA2k basketball SOLD!

In other words, it doesn't matter if its only repeat customers buying the annual NBA2k title. Extrapolate that and you also only have repeat customers buy GTA.

It doesn't matter that it takes 9 different versions of NBA2k (2k20-2k29) to reach 80 million while it takes version GTA6 and GTA7 to reach the same 80 million units sold.

It's like having a retail store selling only orange juice in gallons.

Day 1

Monday, Bob comes in to Tha Prelude's store and buys 28 gallon of orange juice ($5/gallon) on one single day. Bob doesn't come back until next month (30 days later). Bob gives you $140.00 (28 gallon x $5.00).
Total dollars in sale = $140.00 (over a period of 1 day)
Total # of OJ sold = 28 gallons
Note: Since Bob is not coming back until 30 days later, technically 28 gallons of OJ was purchased by Bob for the month.

After 1 day, 28 gallons total of OJ was sold to Bob costing him a total of $140.

Seven individuals (Suzie, Melissa, Ashley, Britney, Ava, Jessica, and Erin) each buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00.

Week 1
Monday Suzie buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Tuesday Melissa buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Wednesday Ashley buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Thursday Britney buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Friday Ava buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Saturday Jessica buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Sunday Erin buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Total 7 gallon of OJ at $35.00 (Week 1 sales)

Week 2

Monday Suzie buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Tuesday Melissa buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Wednesday Ashley buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Thursday Britney buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Friday Ava buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Saturday Jessica buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Sunday Erin buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Total 7 gallon of OJ at $35.00 (Week 2 sales)

Week 3
Monday Suzie buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Tuesday Melissa buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Wednesday Ashley buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Thursday Britney buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Friday Ava buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Saturday Jessica buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Sunday Erin buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Total 7 gallon of OJ at $35.00 (Week 3 sales)

Week 4
Monday Suzie buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Tuesday Melissa buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Wednesday Ashley buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Thursday Britney buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Friday Ava buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Saturday Jessica buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Sunday Erin buys 1 gallon of OJ at $5.00
Total 7 gallon of OJ at $35.00 (Week 4 sales)

After 4 weeks, 28 gallons total of OJ was sold to repeat customers costing them a total of $140
(Suzie, Melissa, Ashley, Britney, Ava, Jessica, Erin)

These girls are all established supporters of Tha Prelude's orange juice while Bob is a new supporter of Tha Prelude's orange juice. It doesn't matter if they're new or repeat customers. At the end of the month, you sold 28 gallons of OJ with sales of $140 to a new customer (Bob) and you also sold 28 gallons of OJ with sales of $140 to repeat customers (Suzie, Melissa, Ashley, Britney, Ava, Jessica, Erin).

As an OJ store owner, do you really care if they are repeat customers or new customers if either clientele buys the same amount of units? You sold 28 gallons to the new customers and got $140. You also sold 28 gallons to established customers and got $140.

But if a span of 5 years i buy 5 2k titles that 1 copy each year that go towards the 7 mill. But if its only 1 release in the span of 5 years im only buying 1 copy in 5 years. So how could we honestly say that they can average them selling 7 mill a year when the people that buy 2k every year will only buy 1 copy for a span of 5 years.

Sorry to get off topic but why the attitude? Seems like when I read your responses to people its always 50% attitude. I know some are young and annoying but some are adults and I don't think your smart responses are necessary. If you don't mean anything by it my bad. The adult in me had to say something.

Sorry guys

If only that were anything close to an accurate statement

(The reason why this topic has no merit)

i was originally under the assumption that the original poster was trying to say that 2k has reached a certain level that gta reached as far as fans. my whole point was that 2k has no way near the same amount of fans gta has reached. eminem releases.

example lets use artist and album sales. eminem releases one albums, sells 10 million. next album 5 years same thing. j. cole releases an album every year. sells 2 mill. just over the course of 5 year he totals 10, eminem, still has a bigger fan base. whiich is why i said what i said as far as how example one stills has a larger fanbase, meaning it doesnt have to release something every year to reach x amount.

Sinner later clarified that its about the end amount over the course and not actually the fans that it has. Which could get confusing when the title reads 2k series just as big as gta. instead of 2k earning the same amount over a 5 years span as gta in through there 5 year cycle.

Basketball isn't popular at all when you look worldwide, so nba 2k is a niche game. Other genres of games like rpg's, shooters, mobas etc. appeals to MUCH wider audience.

Don't think anyone was of the opinion that 2k was on the way down, whichever way you now wish to re-frame this discussion.
