hop step / drop step layups?

Edit: Solved, found out I was holding Square for too long or something like that. It works now at least

Does anybody have any success at doing a hop step layup?
The in-game Controls shows how to do a hop gather but that mostly seems to work when I'm on the perimeter and I gather for a jump shot.
How would I do if I want to do a hop gather for a layup? I mostly just go up for layups whenever I try to do it.

Same as in nba 2k15, while dribbling towards rim (turbo has to be released) , you just quick tap shot button and as player hop steps tap it again to finish or else he'll stop with the ball, can also push stick to preffered side of the hop step layup.

That's exactly what I've been doing, I used to do them all the time in NBA 2k15 but it doesn't seem to work in 16. But alright Ill try it some more and see if I can get the hang of it.
