How to do/make Dunks in Dunk Contest

Maybe it's just me, but I can't figure out how to make Dunks in the Dunk contest.
I've made a few (easy ones), but tried a bunch and miss most of the time.

There'll be a letter (X) to press, then a 2nd one. When do I hit the button and how do I know what to hit 2nd, unless I've already done the dunk. After I hit (X), the bar slides over an inch before stopping. By that time it's too late for the 2nd letter.
Also, when am I supposed to even hit the letter (there are No instructions on this)? Do I do it before the letter, is it supposed to be so after the bar goes 1-2" it's supposed to stop under the letter, or am I supposed to press the button after the letter which I think is too late. I've tried different ways and it seems to miss almost every time.

I was also confused on the 3-pt contest when to hit shoot. There's a middle bar (am I supposed to let go of shoot in there, or get the bar to stop in there after I've let go?).

Ya there is like 2-3 different timings for dunks. Initiate the run/takeoff, then you use the shot button again to perform the dunk, then again to finish the dunk...

They should have a mode to practice the 3pt and dunk contest so you can master certain dunks and find the right rhythm

Just have to get lucky. The timing at times is weird and delayed, making it feel impossible. It's probably the worst dunk contest controls I've seen in ANY basketball game. It makes me wish they would bring back and polish their old dunk contest concept from 2K8-2K10.

Just took a look at the controls for the 2K16 contest. Still looks pretty awful but they have to be better than the Guitar Hero setup we saw previously, right?

That said, totally agree with you about the 2K8-2K10 concept (except combining it with the indoor presentation they have now - was never a fan of the flaming trash cans on blacktop).

In my opinion, NBA Live knocked the controls out of the park back in the mid-2000's. I didn't even like Live but I loved their dunk contest. 2K's first stab at a dunk contest was a close runner-up. Both were miles ahead of anything 2K's done with the contest since (Guitar Hero on forward).

The two killers right now: A lack of freedom and lack of control. It still appears to be a fixed animation that merely requires a difficult two-button press. No choice of approach, take-off, variation, etc. Just botched planning and execution all the way around. And it's a bummer, because I think the right dunk contest could be a really fun draw for people.

Why can't we just play the dunk off and 3 point contest by themselves ??

The only way to access them is thru the season mode correct ?

NBA Live PS2 era always had the best all star weekend..It was simple and fun to play.

2K almost NEVER had a good one..I don't think they are even going to bother to upgrade it.

I haven't made a dunk in the dunk comp since 2k14....
Was never a fan of the guitar hero thing, but at least I could make some dunks and win every now and then.

I have been a lot of dunk comps over the last 2 versions, not 1 made dunk. The timing is pathetic, I have tried to go on time, early, late etc....

Sadly, it looks so basic, but I have honestly not made 1 dunk since the new style come in.

Dunk comp needs an overhaul, well at least the controls do.

Yeah I just said screw it, they should of kept the guitar hero control scheme. I hope after watching this years ASW that they decided to give us an upgrade.

When I get to the Dunk Contest next season, I will try again.

But when am I supposed to hit the letter (since there are No instructions on this)?

Is there ANY way to practice for this contest before it begins?

As far as I know, no.

I know events like these will never be priority but on the off-chance there's someone at 2K twiddling their thumbs and wondering what they could possibly do to refine and improve the 2K experience, I think an All-Star Saturday overall would be a pretty cool feature to roll out.

As it stands now, All-Star Weekend in 2K just feels like one big missed opportunity. The gameplay, presentation, and fluidity of the events is generally so awful that not only is there little interest to play these events but it actively drives people away. I'm a lifelong fan of the dunk contest (even through the bleak times) and even I can't really be bothered with 2K's implementation at this point.

Generally speaking, as I said on page one four years ago, I still think NBA Live set the standard for what a video game dunk contest could and should be. My guess is 2K failed with their dunk contest in part due to trying not to directly copy something that was already done so well by the competitor.

Lastly, I'm not an online gamer but I imagine a great All-Star Saturday roll out could potentially be a lot of fun in the modern online gamer community, even if it's just a niche.
