I'd say each time I see the AI run off a player for some reason I'll control them and put them back into place, and like Case said above, I always change to the defender who is hedging when I tell them not too

Some people complain about the fact that they have to micro-manage every player on the court in order to be successful, but I kind of like it.

It requires you to be hyper-aware of what is going on at all times, just like in real life. I've been playing 2K for 10 years and when I put in 2K16 I was getting blown out every single game by CPU, I thought I would never get better but you realize you have to slow the game down sometimes, play to your strengths, take smart shots, attack mismatches, and protect the ball.
Wow Perfectly said and one of few to understand what 2k has given people.

or for trapping..

Re: Do you ever play OFF-BALL D, if yes, how often?

I try to seldom use off ball D, the only time I do use it to put my CPU players back in position or in position.
The CPU players occasionally will double or switch a players for no reason, they will leave their player (for some reason) even if I have them play tight D.

If I don't use it I will always loose by 10+ because my players seem to get confused on who they're supposed to guard.

When your PG or other defenders run back on D and just stands in the paint and pick up nobody!!!

The most frustrating part of the defense.

vs CPU
I play with PLayer Lock, so yes, I do it every game I play vs the CPU.

When I didn't play as player lock (Previous to 2K14), whoever made the last score or turnover for my team, I just played with that person on D and never switched off

vs a Human
I am on the ball about 87% based on the scouting report.

I switch when

A. To reposition help side defenders
B. To hedge in pNr situation
C. When I SPRINT my C/PF into the paint after my team scores

Those are the only times I can honestly think about it.

If you are not playing mostly on ball d vs a human, I view you as a sucka that has no business playing online vs other people

Re: Do you ever play OFF-BALL D, if yes, how often?

As much as possible. Only time you'll catch me playing offball is when switching to the player with the ball, possibly coming for a double, controlling the big when a pick is coming, or if I see something off ball that I need to do real quick but it's usually onball 95% of the time. With the past few 2Ks, contesting a shot as a user is a better contest than if the AI does it because that was a way for 2K to encourage more onball D. So you'll see a higher chance of a miss if user contested online or offline.

For me it was never a question even as a kid. Whoever had the ball, that's who I switched to. I didn't like just not guarding that person and spectating. I understand switching sometimes but deliberately switching off the person w/ the ball online or offline is something I'll never understand.

THIS

I play on superstar and the CPU will try to abuse you, it will try to run through you 4-5 times and rarely loose the ball.
I can play the best D and they will morph through me or slide me back or even knock me back to get to the basket.

I do it once or twice and I loose the ball.

Never. I play onball every possession (except on an inbound to run my big back to the lane)

If the biggest threat on the court doesn't have the ball in his hands, then I'm playing offball. I'd be dumb to let a guy like Stephen or Klay or Durant kill me by running through screens and getting to their spots.

To hell with that.
