Actually, I think you need to 'Do Work' in order to max all the categories. I originally thought you start with 125 available upgrades, but it's actually less than that. You can eventually work up to 125 and max everything, but you must 'Do Work' to do so.

20 - You have available from the jump
80- are available but must be bought with VC
25- have to be unlocked with other means (Probably Off day practice)
10 - from Doing Work
=
135/150 total slots that will give you a 99 overall.

No player will be able to have 150/150

We really need to agree on a set terminology so everybody is on the same page hahaha..

So just to clarify if I got this right from what I'm reading.

1) you cannot exceed your player archetype maxes. If the max for playmaking is at 15 bars, you can't go past 15 bars.

2) The initial amount of upgrades you receive can only get you to 125 bars, which equates to a 88/89 overall.

3) To reach 99 OVR, 135 upgrades/bars, you must participate in doin work.

tl;dr it's exactly like 2k16, although wingspan, height and weight can push certain attributes further out.

Correct, but no one will be able to get 150/150, 135/150 is a 99 overall

Off Day Practice now fills up the 'Doin Work' Meter. That's why I went with 125. But you're right, I was incorrect about being able to achieve 150m

how do you know that you can get only 10 upgrades from doin work, and 25 upgrades from other means?
