I'm gonna use some College Hoops players to help illustrate my point better. Sorry for the crap quality, lol. This is a player off of Arizona named Chadd Hanavan from one of my Legacy's. He has A potential and a first round grade. He is already a good player. As we can see from his attributes he still has room to grow and be even better. However, he has a cap on certain things. His 3 shot (this is college now so it would dip some in the NBA) is probably about maxed at 76. His potential is here is a C+. Actually, a lot of his offensive skillset is about maxed. He has room to in low post offense, dunking and fouls. This are the only areas I would like to see him grow as a pro. I don't want him shooting like Steph in the league, ever. I want something like this in NBA 2K. Not just that static potential.

Yea I totally agree. I see way too many guys who have 90+ three point attributes in MyLeague which is why we should be able to set the potential high for that player (the highest level the attribute will reach during this players career)

Then on the other hand, players athleticism attributes regress way too much during their career which is why we should also have a potential low attribute (the lowest level the attribute will reach during this players career)

I think it would add a whole new element to the game. Maybe you draft a Center who can't shoot the ball, but after a few years he develops a usable jumpshot just like guys like Brook Lopez, Marc Gasol, etc. Or maybe you draft a guy who shoots the lights out in his rookie season, but isn't a good shooter for the rest of his career. Maybe you draft a guy like Blake Griffin who was an amazing rebounder in his rookie season, but has slowly become a worse and worse rebounder throughout his career.

The possibilities would be endless with something like this in the game

Having one attribute for potential is definitely an issue.

If nothing else players coming in should have a potential "floor" which might be lower then their current ability and a potential "ceiling".

That alone could give variety based on injury or playing time or simply luck with development.

So a guy like Fultz has a high floor...making him a safe pick but also a high ceiling. Maybe Ball has a higher ceiling but lower floor and better chance to bust.

Forget player progression, the auto-generated draft class ratings are still pretty crap right now. The logic behind these ratings needs to be fixed first.

I'd rather have progression fixed first. Classes can be fixed by editing them yourself or downloading someone else's classes who have put time into them. Progression isn't something that can be fixed unless you're willing to go edit every single players attributes and tendencies year by year for every player in the league. I don't think anyone has the time or desire to do that, It would take days.

If this would be a thing I'm sure roster makers are gonna love that

Yep. I think players just progress in those areas because they have a high overall potential and once they hit that peak start age they just go up in ratings until they hit that number. That's not a bad system but it kind of kills us having specialists.

The league is full of guys who excel in one area and are pretty flat everywhere else. I don't mind the number of good three point shooters, that's where the league is heading, but they are good across the board as well. It also hurts roster building because we have so many players who do so much well. Or, we have guys who are basically useless because they have low overalls and low potential. There isn't much in between.

I love what Dyslexicphish said about Yogi Ferrell. I totally agree. Remember back in 2K9 you had to scout players not on your team.

Imagine this: I'm playing as the Clippers in ML. CP3 goes down in Jan for a few months. I trade for a decent vet PG like Felton. And I also sign Melo Trimble from the NBDL to a minimum deal for the rest of the season. When I sign him his overall is a 62 with a "?" next to it. All I have to go off of are vague grades for his attributes and his player type (crafty PG). Of course, I could always go into edit player and see exactly what he is but I wont do that. The team plays well and stays afloat while CP3 is away. Felton plays well and so does Trimble (avg 5pts 4apg. 47% shooting, 35% from 3 in 12 mins/per) Once CP3 returns he starts, Felton backs him up and Trimble hardly plays anymore. Naturally, his numbers dwindle. However, now I see his overall as a 67? Instead of vague grades I now have a C+ for instance. Now we get to the playoffs and Trimble easily outplays Felton; he's a better defender. That offseason I see Trimble is now a 69 overall. None of his ratings have progressed, they are just revealed more now. I can also see his potentials. He is basically what he is except he has a B+ potential in 3pt shooting and perimeter D even though he is currently graded as a C (71) and C+(76), respectively. He is maxed out everywhere else, though. If he becomes as good as he can be he'd be about a 77. He could be an ok 3 and D guy some day so I keep him and let Felton walk. Melo plays about the same next season but 3 shot is terrible, he shoots like 29%. Well now his potential there might drop down to B- or C+. I know it's probable a coding nightmare but I want something along those lines.

Re: What do you guys feel should be done with the potential system in 2k18?

No sports game has gotten progression even close to realistic. They don't even seem to understand the word potential. In real life when sports people talk potential they mean the guy can become good. Not they will become good. For every high potential player that makes it, 10 to 20 wash out. Potential in this game simply tells you how high their overall is going to become. A linear improvement and regressiion. What it is missing is randomness and unpredictability.

I like the idea of potential for each attribute. They would need to introduce some randomness so players can go up or down in each attribute year to year with a potential grade determining the odds of improvement and the degree. A lot of players are what they are re in the nba. Some are reread great at 20 are reread maintain the greatness. That doesn't mean they constantly improve while some have a few good skills with others that may or may not improve.
