They added the flex offense in 2k17, but they didn't really design it the way Jerry Sloan ran it with his utah jazz in the 90's, which is the most famous version of it, where there's lots of screens and cuts around the mid range area, in 2k17 the Flex offense has your 2 bigs out behind the perimeter most the time. Sloan's flex had Malone and either one of the centers like Oostertag or foster inside the perimeter or , sometimes lingering outside to draw out a defender, when i use the 98 jazz in 2k17 im calling out a play from the playbook just to set the offense every time down the floor, but i wish they would add the Flex freelance offense that Sloan ran into nba 2k18, cause it would make using that team alot more fun and efficient.

Sloans version of the flex was called 1-4 freelance. The flex in 2k17 was the traditional flex offense.
Unfortunately neither version is in 2k18

we'll find out eventually just hopefully we get told instead of trying to run a triangle offence and looking in every playbook and not finding it.Comment

Re: Flex Offense in 2k17
Why are offenses being taken out of the game instead of adding more. This is 2k17.5 with a playground and random stores.
IM not spending extra money for video game shoes and clothes and if i wanna stand around to wait to play ill do that at xsportComment

Re: Flex Offense in 2k17
I'm a fan of the old-school flex offense, as it's what my teams ran as our primary offensive system from 7th - 12th grade, but unfortunately, it just doesn't translate very well to video games.
A traditional flex set only has two scoring actions (the cross screen and the down screen) that repeat until someone gets open, and in a video game, it's very difficult to regulate and balance how frequently those actions will generate open shots.
If the balance is like it used to be back in College Hoops 2K8, where I would create a flowing, 35-second flex sequence from scratch using the custom play creator, then you will have an unstoppable money play that generates an open shot every single possession.
If the balance is like it was in NBA 2K17, where lots of off-ball tugging, grabbing, and colliding prevent anyone on offense from making a clean cut or setting an effective screen, then you have an unusuable play that gets no one open and ends up being a waste of development time, effort, and coding space.
With how easily disrupted the flex freelance was by 2K17's off-ball physicality, I can definitely see why the flex offense was removed from 2K18.
But unless Czar has taken out all of the flex plays, too, there should still be a bunch of set plays you can call that have flex actions embedded in them. Just look for play calls that have the word flex in the name. I avoided calling them last year because they would just get stifled by off-ball collisions, but with 2K18's new motion system, maybe they'll work a little better this year?
I'm definitely still seeing NBA teams using flex actions, they just don't spend entire offensive possessions running through a flowing, repeating flex set like you'd see in college or high school basketball.Last edited by jyoung; 09-10-2017, 06:03 PM.Comment

Originally posted by Da_CzarWe had to reduce the amount of freelances. There was no way to get them all on the new motion system, and I didn't want anything running on the old one. I think we are down to 20 or something near that.Comment
