Before, you had to reach a certain rank to use them online.

Yep. You could use them in unranked matches before too. It was either 2K12 or 2K13, because it was possible on the previous gen.

You've always been able to use classic teams, some years you just had to reach a certain rank too.

The only problem using almost any classic team vs a current team though, is that your lack of depth will come back to haunt you in the 2nd quarter.
