Picking up your dribble

I have a problem with the fact that when i pick up my dribble it will ruin a current play being run. It will scramble all your players around and rush them to come and try and get the ball. Its mainly a problem when i play online, opponents are hounding me trying to get the ball like a dog, or just trying to stand in the spot im dribbling in, and im currently trying to survey the floor looking at everything as my play unfolds, im getting the ball stolen a bunch. If i could just pick up my dribble to protect the ball and have everyone else still stay where they are and not go into instant panic mode that would be great.
