    Dunking Sounds

Anybody else feel that dunking sounds are way too quiet, boring and anticlimactic?

Listen to the dunks in this video (especially the first dunk): https://youtu.be/VRvUFSxLBDs

Then listen to the dunks in this video (Footage from NBA 2k18):

I feel like it would bring so much more life, excitement and realism to the game if the dunking sounds were more realistic.

Promises were made in past games for more authentic sounds. Dunking sounds have lacked for what seems like forever. Atmosphere in general needs revamped. Best sounding 2k was 2k11 and 2k12 IMO.

They've stayed the same for about 10 years.

The rim animations are getting better, but the sounds are...well, nothing like basketball.

I agree that dunk sounds can be improved but I don't think that means they all need to become louder. For instance, here's an Andre Drummond power dunk from earlier this week:

          <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3cOGmjyu5IA" frameborder="0" gesture="media" allow="encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

In fact, if you watch a series of dunks from any given night in the NBA, most of them are not going to be super loud:

          <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/gpeAt1km7WA" frameborder="0" gesture="media" allow="encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I actually think 2K has at least moved in the right direction a little. A lot of their one-handed dunks without a rim grab seem to sound cleaner than they used to. I'd have to look back on older 2K's but I swear there was a time where even clean one-handed dunks would still have "monster-dunk-in-an-empty-gym" audio.

I think my biggest issue with their dunk sound effects right now is that obnoxious and drawn out rattle on a lot of the two-handed dunks. It sounds like an audio clip that was captured on a certain brand of high school rim, not on an actual NBA rim. On most NBA rims, there's a slight rattle on some dunks in which the rim breaks away but it's usually very quick and concise. The rattle heard in 2K a lot of times sounds like a rim crunching and visibly shaking back into position (again, like some high school/amateur rims tend to do, depending what gym you're in).

There's a lot of clean two-hand dunks out there too, which I'd like to hear more of in 2K. A good example comes on the DeAndre' Bembry dunk at the 1:20 mark in the video above.

I'd be okay with some more realistic loud sound effects, but only for certain dunks on rare occasions. Stromile Swift's dunk was abnormally loud for a reason (two parts Swift, one part old NBA rim, one part circumstance). Sometimes intense dunks still have a normal dunk sound.

As a whole, I've found 2K's dunk sound effects to be too tinny. A lot of people have compared them to a garbage compactor. I see where they're coming from. More bass and fullness would help.

I didn’t necessarily mean just louder, that was just the video I used for an example.

But if you listen to most of the dunks in the game, the rim itself just doesn’t sound right. There’s too much net sounds on dunks and not enough rim sounds and they just don’t sound right.

Listen to the James Harden dunk in the video I provided in the original post. The sound the rim makes doesn’t sound anything like the sound the rim makes in 2k and you can’t even hear the net. I don’t even know why the net makes a sound when you dunk in 2k

But I agree with everything else you said. I think they need more bass and I think they need to fix the sound the rim makes

I reached out to Ronnie and copied and pasted the above in my email. He already responded back and said that he would let the audio team know. See below:

Made sure audio team saw this, thanks!

i would ask them 'why did audio go backwards over the years? When 2k11 came out you had authentic sounds for all the areanas, especially on the classic teams! Presentation continues to go down (aside from the commentary) which has steadily been good since day one. Although the little tidbit stories they spoke of when you used legends and have been cut significantly...

Most of Kevin Harlan lines from this trailer are still in the game. I appreciate the things like Kobe or KG as guest commentators but audio in general really needs to be taken seriously for 2k19.

Yeah. There's definitely repetitiveness without question. What saves it every year, is the organic flow and how they start talking about the game within middle of sentence then cut into a sequence going on the court, no sports game has ever done it better. I do appreciate them adding new commentators and it still keeps it fresh sounding from that standpoint.

I wish we could get specific PA announcers for the different venues also. Not just the same guy ya know?
