What is the truth behind shoulder width?

Is it purely cosmetic? It's the only customizable thing about your player that doesn't tell you what it effects. All the YouTube videos always say "be sure to max out that shoulder width to get the bully drive by animation". Is this a myth?

I'm gonna make a Blake Griffin-type player... just choose any?
