I've recently discovered collectible card/board games, and those games really highlight a flaw about yearly release games with MyTeam-ish game modes.*
With a collectible card/board games, you can jump into the game at literally any time as long as the game is still published and you have a group of friends willing to play. With a small investment, one could have a competitive list/squad quickly. With yearly release games like 2k, if you haven't started playing MyTeam by November, you might as well not start. The investment (both time and money) into something that will last less than 12 months is absurd. Whereas, a card/board game collection can be played far into the future. My coworkers and I have spent hundreds of hours playing a board game that we have all spent a combined $1,000+ on over the last three years, for example. That game doesn't expire. My collection is using the same cards today as it did when I started.*
I'm the kind of person that is willing to invest $500+ into a collectible game (and I have), but I won't ever touch a MyTeam mode simply because of the shelf life. The value for time/money isn't there for me. I hope 2k finds a way to extend the value players get from this kind of game mode since it seems like something that a lot of people would like if it weren't for the barriers to entry.*
