I think we all agree the rookie who came in with the biggest hype was Lebron (SI cover, 1st team USAtoday as a junior, games on ESPN as a senior) he also had the highest/most varied skillset. Seeing guys come in rated higher than him is well......OFF.

He was a 78 in 2K4.

A great rating IMO...but for consistency sake, no rookie should be coming in rated higher than that the same way only MJ and coming-off-back-to-back-titles-Lebron (2K14) are 99s. A great example being last year when neither Fultz nor Lonzo came anywhere flipping CLOSE to the 80 they were given at launch. Simmons had a 79 (I disagreed with that as well) IMO there should be a gap between Lebron and these rookies coming in unless they're generational guys. Simmons looks the part but he's still far from Lebron. I'd have liked to see him at maybe a 75 and we should be working out way down from there.

Ratings accuracy is important and can happen after its deserved. With Roster updates there's literally never a reason to do a fluff "we-want-him-to-be-fun-to-play-with rating" IMO.
Not to rag on dude doing the official edits but he's far from the "best in the business. BAR NONE."

There are five, six or more roster creators (Ronyell, DC/Hyperballer, VTCRB, Sonicmage, etc.) that do better, more consistent, thoughtful work and in their spare time.

2K's ratings are like Madden's at this point - and truthfully have been throughout the series lineage - a lot of pandering and "fluff" ratings to appease the NBA athletes' ego.

Why do you think we consistently see 5 or more players rated above a 90 every damn year?

I wish the corporate dogs would let Mike have free reign, more assistance and in - depth scouting to really, really flesh out the game (out of the box). Instead, it is a 4 - 5 month (or longer) chore for the hardcore and die hard roster editors to make the game truly shine.
Also, I agree that rookies are annually overrated out of the box, but again they are juggling pleasing the athletes, the fans ("why ain't Doncic an 85, brah?") and the corporate overloads at Take - Two.

Soooo yeah...I stopped reading right there. You're certainly entitled to your opinion but let's not jump out the window. Keep in mind NBA 2K has less than 15 players rated 90 or better...while Madden usually has atleast 2-3 90 rated players on every team. This is a huge part of crippling its gameplay since sports games essentially function as ratings expressions/player abilities on top of an engine. Too-high ratings are a huge culprit re: why any simmed season results in every NFL record getting broken, bad passes are rare, 55 yard FGs are routine and Madden games exceed NFL scores even though you're only playing 5 minute quarters.

Only in Madden would a 3rd year player who's about to get cut with 43-576-3 career numbers be the most unstoppable player in Madden 16 &17. Why? 99 Speed of course. So let's do a better comparison.

We're not going to agree with all of anyone's ratings (notice i'm in this thread commenting how Doncic is too high IMO) but Stauff does an outstanding job with his. 2Ks ratings are a huge part of its gameplay being A1.

We'll have to agree to disagree, Kushmir. Having helped on rosters (inputting) over the last 6 or 7 seven years I can say that his inconsistent implementation, although better than the previous "official" editor, is why sim stats, player progression and other issues exist.

Also, many times it is a copy and paste job (between two NBA players) with certain tendencies, animations and badges.

I completely agree about Doncic being overrated, but at least his cyberface is perfect. Ronnie mentioned on Instagram that Doncic will have his tattoo in the final build.
