Nah id say scale your height, but then play with weight/wingspan to get the ratings that line up with how you play more or less.

So lets say you were a shot creating athletic finisher at 6'9". Have a look at ball control, shooting, strength, speed and block.

Lets say you were a good defender for your size and had no trouble matching up with any pf and most centers despite your size, and generally needed to be setup on offense to score. Then i would bump the wingspan and weight up to the 7'2"+ and 260+ range give you a BIG boost to strength, boxout, block and shot contest.

Or if you were more of a 3-4 tweener who liked to play on the wing a little and bring the ball up the floor on the break, but had trouble guarding huge 4s and 5s, then slot the weight down to the 230 range and bring the wingspan down to 7'0" or under, and youll have a MUCH more reliable jumpshot and boosted ball control, speed and quickness.

I dunno if this is everyone, but theres usually a couple guys in the league who i watch and see and see pieces of my game in - figure out who those guys are for you, and check out what theyre ratings/badges are to establish a baseline.
(Even if its not a current player if you still have 2k18 they have tons of classic teams with everyone from All timers to super memorable role players that you can use. I used guys like KG, toni kukoc, shawn marion, larry bird and AD for example)

I knew i had found the right build when i sent a screenshot of the gold badges to my buddy and he started laughing at how much they described my game.

Im really impressed with the system this year, it feels really organic. In the full version youll be able to see how each adjustment affects your ratings, but for now the red and green bars are a decent indicator.

EDIT: if you were super big bonded or a lank dog you might want to adjust the height to make sure you get a body type that reminds you of yourself as well, i.e: if i was zion williamson or brandon ingram my weight is pretty integral to my identity on the court

The best way is what is going to be the most fun role to play.

Last year I was a pure rim protector and loved it. I played a role on O but I was an accessory not a primary scorer and on D I played the hardest. It was fun.

I did it by buying into my ProAm team. We were shuffling and making dudes, and none were making SFs or lockdowns (2k17), so I made one. Not ball dominant on offense, but figured my best contribution would be on the defensive side. Also learned that my offense wouldn't be non-existent, so I grinded every badge (except ankle breaker), played within the build, and now love being a lock; secondary sharp.

That's basically it, figure out the role you want to play, and make a dude that fits. Then, try to additionally contribute in the ways that don't match your build; without forcing the issue.

Choose it based on how you want to play and have the patience to grind the character.

Everybody wants a shortcut, but there is none.

There's a couple responses like this, and they are correct.

When I was a kid, I was a pass minded PG. I grew up I idolized Shawn Kemp. When I started making the players that represented me, in 2k13/14 they were obviously ones who could do everything well. I started to find that attacking the rim, and either scoring or dropping a perfect dime brought me the most Joy.

Flash forward and it makes sense that I ran a pure slasher in 17, and a Playmaking Slasher in 18. Same thing in 19 now. It matches my skillset and that makes it easier to keep one build.

I guess yes theyre correct? It just seemed a bit dismissive to me because I think if he knew what build he would enjoy playing as the most already he would just make that build. He wasnt even sure what position he would like, let alone archetype. Hes not looking for a shortcut because hes impatient about having a low overall, hes looking for a way to keep from getting FOMO on the tons of different archetype/position combos and find the motivation to commit to one player.

It sounds like over the last couple years you were able to narrow it down and figure out what is funnest/works best for you through trial and error. The question seemed to be to me, what do you do if youre not sure about your fav playstyle and what the funnest/most effective build for you is going to be?

Thats why i think your anecdote about being a young pass first pg who idolized shawn kemp helping you figure out your playstyle to be a lot more instructive for him than telling him to shutup and dribble lol you know what i mean?
