Would you pay for annual roster updates instead of annual editions?

If on next gen 2k decided to just put out "NBA 2K" and updated it yearly with a 60 roster update, would you like that model instead?

To me... This would fix a lot of the issues we have every year. There's always game breaking launch issues for the first 2 weeks. Then half the patches break the game. Only for them to fix the problem the last patch made with a new patch. Then 6 months into the year, we're not even playing the same game they thought they were putting out at launch. It just becomes this ugly hodge podge of the previous edition and the "new" one.

If they ditched the annual release entirely, they could tune the build till it's done. Then roll out new patches when they really want to add stuff.

Why would anyone not? Especially after this season. I'd be totally ok with pay 20 bucks for roster updates. Pandemic has caused enough problems this year. I'm sure logistically they are having trouble developing for next year. It wouldn't be a bad thing for them.

Only reason I could see anyone objecting is the idea that they ought to just do one release every two years and update the rosters for free.

The only way I would be interested in that, is if they also updated My League, with the commentary and the season to the next yr, instead of playing with the current rosters, in the previous seasons calendar, so it would have to be more than just a roster update for me.

Obviously they would bring a whole patch. But look. Ain't no way in hell they are going to do it. This is about MONEY.

Yeah,the way I understand it they are making far more money on VC and MyTeam packs than they are on physical sales at this point.It might actually benefit them to go full on WoW style and just release new cosmetics, card packs,boosts,etc.

They could still do roster updates with patches but at least in the meanwhile they could also fine tune the game so that its a consistent experience instead having to rebalance everything every year.

It would also let them flesh the game out more since they won't have to develop an entire new game every single year.

Depends on what they do with park and rec tbh. At this point, we can update the rosters better than 2K ourselves.

This site has some good roster builders.
Might as well pay them if its just a roster update.

Get 1 badge free or very badge limited roster.

Would be a very bad business wise decision for 2K to go that route.

The game sells regardless and not releasing it yearly would leave to much money on the table.

Not to mention people will find a reason to complain anyways and having a 2 year dev cycle is only going to create bigger expectations with bigger disappointment and way more moaning then there already is.

There really is little incentive for a company to do that.

Best they could do is get 2 teams to build semi separate games and have them take turns in releasing 1 yearly.
That would just create additional cost they dont have to so....

It doesn't matter when the game releases. It's going to have bugs/glitches regardless. In this modern era of gaming, patches are the norm. There's ZERO incentive for them to change the development cycle.

1) Game servers are on for roughly two years. Consumers have the power to buy the game every two years if they want to.
2) Roster updates really only matters for PNO which is a small NBA 2K community anyways.
3) There are some great roster makers in the community, so consumers have options for rosters when it comes to offline play.
4) There's no such thing as "tuning" the game. 90% of the time, NBA 2K has it right from Day 1. You know what REALLY changes the game? People constantly bitching and moaning, because the game is "too hard" or doesn't play how THEY expect it to play.

People need to stop have this pipe dream that having a 2-year development cycle is going to make this game "perfect". Most times than not, gamers don't play the game as it was intended to be played. They immediately try to find the easiest and cheesiest ways to win games and/or to be OP.

wouldn't pay at all for roster Updates. Modders can create New rosters including cyberfaces and everything themselves, why would i pay for that?

I’d pay something to be able to save everything to my local hard drive and have an unlimited number of saves so when the servers shut down I won’t lose any MyLeague customizations or all the custom rosters and draft classes available.

But I really shouldn’t have to pay anything to get more than 10 roster saves or to customize my MyLeague and keep it forever.

I know I only have a limited 1/2 a terabyte of room on my PS4 though and I guess might not survive without the vast online storage space.

1. NBA 2K20 sold EIGHT MILLION copies as of two months ago. I could end this here and that would suffice.

2. Is 2K cutting jobs or labor hours? No? You mean they have the same exact development overhead? They still have to pay 1.1 BILLION in licensing fees? How in gods name would it make sense for them to take less money for a more expensive development process?

3. No new game means VC sales stagnate. Who is spending on MyTeam or MyPlayer 20 months in? 2K makes SIGNIFICANTLY more money from VC than they do from retail copies of the game. Not releasing a game would CRIPPLE the franchise financially and potentially even bankrupt the company. I can't even begin to get over what a dumb, thoughtless notion this is. THEY PAY 157 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR IN LICENSING. Just take a year off! What??????

4. This question (presumably formed by a functioning adult that understands concepts like "contractual obligations") isn't a remotely serious one. It makes no economic sense and comes down to pie in the sky wishful thinking. Stop arguing (whining) with your emotions and apply logic.

5. THE VAST MAJORITY OF GAMERS DO NOT GET THE GAME EVERY SINGLE YEAR. It ISN'T a roster update for a significant portion of people who buy the game. Instead of approaching the game with a sense of entitlement, moaning about what you deserve, exercise some self-control in your purchase decisions like everyone else.

6. As a roster editor.... Bruh. Nobody is paying $20 for a roster update. There are a small handful of people out there who've given me $20 for a roster update, sure. In the PS2 era of memory cards where people couldn't just download/update for free off 2K's own server. They'll SHUT DOWN that custom roster server the second it's affecting sales. Whoops, didn't think of that, didya?

Can we put these level zero discussions to rest? All they do is propagate false narratives from people circle jerking about how unhappy they are about the $60 they spent 600 hours on.
