I would always edit the contract to the league minimum before releasing. Then any team can sign them regardless of their salary situation. Then once on the correct team you can edit the deal to what you want it to be.

The easiest way is to just let him clear waivers.

That way a) his dead money hits Detroit (albeit unfortunately inaccurately even if you edit his buyout number prior) and b) you can sign for the minimum (after editing those those contract sliders to 100).

What I usually do is, save his dna, edit all his stats to 25, sign him for the minimum, and apply his saved dna again once he's signed

Probably to keep his career stats, award history etc. Those things don't transfer via Player DNA. I hope 2k fixes that issue in future releases
