OS, Let's Get CONSTRUCTIVE: What did you like from the older 2K's?

I thought it would be interesting if we can be constructive and put together a nice little compilation of ideas and positive things that you enjoyed and thought were great from all the 2K's (including 2k9) that have been released thus far.

That way maybe the developers can go back and check out some of the things that we mention here.

Hopefully this will give the developers an idea as to what worked great in the series past and makes sure that it makes it's way into future games and hopefully 2K10 in some shape or fashion.

You can include the College Hoops series as well.

I feel that this can much easier for the developers as they will have something tangible that they can see, and they KNOW that they can implement into the game. This as opposed to "ideas" that they really may or may not be able to incorporate.

This does not have to be limited to just gameplay either. Presentation, graphics, features, etc. are all welcome. Anything that you thought was done well or added to the experience should be mentioned.

Also, if you too enjoyed a part of an older game that was mentioned by someone else already, either repeat it, or just quote it with a "+1" or something of that nature that way the developers know that it was more than just one person that enjoyed that aspect of the game. You can also just echo someones previous post by repeating it. Then they'll have an idea of what was a popular aspect of the game.

I know that a lot of you guys remember a lot of the good things from the past games. I also know that a lot of you guys actually still own some older copies. So, lets make some good use out of both.

    Let your voice be heard.

Re: OS, Let's Get CONSTRUCTIVE: What did you like from the older 2K's?

        NBA 2K6 (PS2)
        + The Crib
+ Courts and Warm-ups in Street Mode (24/7)
+ Craig Sager On-screen (with Team Color Suit)
+ External Cutscenes (the Alamo in San Antonio)

        College Hoops 2K6 (PS2)
+ Mini-games in Practice (Fastbreak, Knockout, etc.)
        + Editable Classic Teams

        College Hoops 2K8 (PS3)
+ Unlockables and Records in Trophy Room
        + Play Creator
        + Court Editor
        + Chant Editor
        + Isomotion Tutorials / Drills

Great idea for a topic. I haven't been playing 2K hoops games since the Dreamcast like some of you (never had one, but even at that, NBA 2K6 was my first). Whether it is former 2K games or the competition's games -- or even still, the competition's former games -- there are plenty of ideas to be reaped for future 2K titles.

I particularly liked The Crib; in 2K6, you had to purchase all banners, bobbleheads, posters, cut-outs, etc. In NBA 2K7 (PS3), they were all there and your crib was decorated for you. College Hoops had something similar, but a little bit different. All PS2 ones that I've played have had air hockey. I can't count the hours I spent playing air hockey in College Hoops 2K6... pretty much all of my time that I didn't spend with Fastbreak in Practice Mode.

i forget which 2k had those blocks where the ball would end up in the stance...albeit it was a bit excessive and it happens too often but i would like to see those types of monster blocks back

                * Players talking to coaches in association mode

                * ESPN presentation combined with the replays from 2k9
                * With a halftime shov featuring Kennys (or Clark's if you want to update it to reflect the change in commentator) Stamp of Approval in 2K7
                * Authenticity for legends (ie short shorts)
                * External Cutscenes during the start of the game like in 2k6
                * Play/Court/Chant Creator from CHOOPS 2k8

Just wanted to repeat the things from the old games which people already have mentioned and which I'd also like to see be brought back. And another one I'm sure others would like to see as well:

                * Create-A-Shoe editor from 2k6 (or was it 7?)

^ mrnoobie: aren't they already possible if the timing is right in 2k9? I could swear I've seen blocks like that once or twice in the game...

Re: OS, Let's Get CONSTRUCTIVE: What did you like from the older 2K's?

For the most part, every thing I liked about the older 2k's were related to the playbooks and playcalling by the 'AI'.

The older 2k's had MUCH better 'NBA Style' playbooks and execution by the cpu IMO. Looking back at NBA2K-NBA2K3, I recall how the playbooks consisted of ALOT iso's and motion plays in each team's playbook.

Only thing missing back then was the pick and roll and drive and kick game but, 2k til this day still has not got that part of the NBA game right.

I remember specificly, really loving how there were plays to post up for the bigger guards like Tmac and Kobe in the earlier versions. I used the Magic alot back then and I really miss how older 2k's were able to portray the Iso game soo well.

I liked how simple the playcalling was then also, and that you had only a handful of plays at your dispossal. Simple was better back then because, the execution was very good and the AI would utilize the team specific playbooks pretty well.

Dribble penetration by the little guards in the older games was much better also. Iverson for example, was a chore to keep out of the lane in the older 2k's...waaaay before any tendacies were introduced. In the current 2k's even with a maxed out drive tendacy, he along with Parker, Arenas, Dwill, etc....are all too busy trying to accumalate 15 APG.

I guess what I'm trying to relay is that all of NBA2k's games are drivin by the playcalling, but the coding and execution was much better in the older 2k's NBA2K-2K3. Those 4 releases had the best AI playcalling by far, in this series IMO.

It wasn't perfect but, it had no issues with laser pinpoint passes, scoring pg's actually attempted to do so with penetration, and the iso game was much better.

And the playbooks were simple and to the point, not 25-30 plays per team like now which are pretty much window dressing for single player because, the AI calls the same plays for each team anyway.

I'd rather have it like the old days where, you only had like 6 plays but, the AI could actually get teams and players to play as they should, within each team's playbook and sets.

I know Rob, worked on these older versions of the game when the playcalling was very good. I just hope he and the crew get the CPU AI playcalling back to a high level for NBA2K10.

Simple was much better back then IMO.

In regards to presentaion, I liked the score ticker scroll at the bottom of the screen for other games around the league while playing your game. And I liked how they handled dynamic attendance during season mode.

Don't forget that you can add things you thought were positive from 2K9 as well.

Let's keep this going. When it's all said and done we can have a pretty exhaustive list for the devs to look at.

O and also, if you too enjoyed a part of an older game that was mentioned by someone else already, either repeat it, or just quote it with a "+1" or something of that nature that way the developers know that it was more than just one person that enjoyed that aspect of the game. In regards to 2k9, I really like the offensive formations that are in the game. Players set up in the half court with alot of variety and that's really cool.

Sometimes, PF's and C's are in the high post other times their down low etc. I hope/wish this will be a little more player specific in the future though. ie; Okur, Bonner, Rasheed, Jamison, Troy Murphy etc..... spending ALOT more time out behind the 3 point arc. Pietrus, Bowen etc. camping out in the corners.

In general it was good to see front court players not just running down to the low block every possesion.

The real time cuts and post play animations/celebrations are flawless in 2k9, very well done. Everthing just transitions soo well in this department and players almost never look robotic or lifeless.

I wasn't too happy with the AI and gameplay this year in 2k9 but, if I were to pick something that I really like about the gameplay, it probably would be the layup animations.

The layup animations in this game are down right beautiful at times. They REALLY did an excellent job in that area.

Not too many things I really digged about the AI this year but, my favorite AI addition is how each team runs their final play of the qtr. through their superstar when playing the AI.

Playing against the AI controlled Lakers, Heat, Cavs, or the Nuggets with the cpu with the last possesion of the qtr.? the AI intiates the final play with the ball in Kobe's, Dwade's, Lebron's, or Melo's hands.

Really nice touch to the game, as you see most teams IRL almost always let their star handle the ball during last possesion scenarios.

Bring back the simplicity of the controls - like 2K6/2K7 (PS2). No, I don't mean going back to the PS2 controls, I mean make it a bit more simple, more responsive, more fluid.

Coach mode from nba2k8, is a feature that was really nice. In 2k9, i cannot make on the fly subs because of this.

In 2k8, coach mode would allow the AI to take over control of your team for a couple of seconds while on the fly adjustments were made.
