Playing Defense (Take a Look at this)

I don't know why, but I find it incredibly difficult to play defense as the user. No matter what, it seems as if my defense is always off balance, doesn't contest shots, nor picks off passes leading to easy dunks in the paint.

I've played online and simply got crushed due to my poor defense. Defense wins games and if I don't fix this problem, I won't win, plain and simple.

So what I ask from all of my nba 2k veterans, what are the do's and don'ts to playing defense in this game?

What should I keep in mind in order to play the tightest and most efficient defense?

And most importantly, how to I stay in front of my man and yet now get him too much space to score?

Are you using the LT in bursts when you get beat and need to recover/react more quickly?

That could be one of my problems. I normally use LT each time I move my player on defense and let go once I'm not moving. Should that be the way it's done?

Yes, only use LT in bursts. I had to learn this myself as its different from last year. Last year you can hold it down and play tight defense, now anytime you do it, you can be sure the cpu will beat you on a dribble or shoot over you.

It's like using RT when your caught off the screen and you lose your man, when you use turbo to sprint to your player, sometimes you outrun him.

give a cushion, and when that cushion is depleted use L2

when you are sure of the direction a player is going, go that direction and use L2

            What Jesus said.

Definitely don't hold the LT the entire time you're on D, that'll burn through and waste it. I just move the LS on D unless I get beat and have to bust my arse to recover. Works very well. I can challenge most shots by the CPU on Pro/Default unless it's Kobe/LBJ/Wade etc.

I thought I read in an insight that lock on d/intense d/crowding has been removed from 2K11. All I use is the left stick movement to cut off driving angles and paths, since the body up animations are highly effective when you anticipate correct angles being driven

No wonder my guys stamina is always high, didn't know about LT draining stamina like that.

As far as contesting shots, I set my defensive controls to "absolute" rather than camera relative, that way if you press up on the right stick regardless where you are on the court, you know your player will put his hands up assuming he is in position to do so. It has helped me play more consistent defensively, I've felt.

this thread could be a great tool to help people.

use real basketball techniques. these are some of my basic rules

                    1. Dont put intense pressure on the ball 30 feet from the bucket
                    2. know the opposition, if your playing westbrook on the 3pt line back up a few steps to defend the drive, let him live on the three point line
                    3. If your playing a guy like kobe, for the most part your sol, but play the drive and use a lengthy player so when he does shoot from perimeter get in his face(think teyshaun prince)
                    4. lay off of intense d, especially when your 1 foot away from the offensive player, take a step back to get some closing space
                    5. go under picks or go through them early, for some reason i haven't gotten beat on the jumper too many times
                    Live, Love, Learn
                    and Play Basketball
I live in a word where I give respect to get it back.
I'm not owed anything by anyone.

Also using R-stick works well to cutoff isomotion moves. It takes practice, but try it out.

i have realised that LS is the key on D. u have to put the player in the way to the basket. sometimes its no easy due to the isomotion and you must read the movement.
About the RS i have to say that everytime i use it (without lose my position in front of the player who drives the ball) the referee calls deffensive fault. anybody knows how to use it?

And now a question: How can i switch matchups on a screen? is there an option to configure it? thanks in advance.

Okay so you push the Right stick into the offensive player when he's attenoting a jumpshot or layup?
