I mean the ability to go from being behind the post player to move to 3 quarters front and eventually into full front and back again.

I've been trying to do it for a while but it won't let me move to different positions.

I was thinking maybe the controls were different and I wasn't doing something right.

It can be done. I did it once accidentally but couldn't remember how so I just decided to check the manual. It's on page 12. L2/LT + left stick towards opponent.
