Tips for playing as a SG in My Player?

I've just started a new My Player and I've been drafted to the Thunder! (1st round, 23rd pick). I'm kind of new to Basketball but it's fast becoming my favourite sport. Could any of the pro's here give me some advice to play the shooting guard position well, thanks.

Re: Tips for playing as a SG in My Player?

Ok, Iv'e always used PG's but I give general Tips for the guard position.

Upgrade your skills as smart as possibe. If you want to score easy points, fill your Midrange shot, consistency, shoot of dribble catagories to 70+ as quick as you can. Then you'll want to upgrade layup/dunk/close/3pt (one or two of those) depending on how you want to play. Be sure to also focus on On Ball D, blocks and steal to get your D up.

As far as play style, you want to get your jumper stats up so you have a consistant open jump shot. This gets you points pretty easily from open midrange shots. Also on offense, just play the plays that are called and do as they say. Dont hog the ball or take bad timed/contested shots. The LB/L1 button calls for a pick when u have the ball> use that for assists if the pick and roll pass is there, or use the screen to get an open shot (eventually you'll have skills to take it to the Rack once layup/dunk and vertical/speed are high). For starters stick to midrange (i usually get it up to 85+ before i do much of anything else.

On defense make sure you stay on your man, never let him by you or get a open shot. This is tough when a guy wants to shoot or drive (Dwade Kobe. etc) but try your best to not let them score (it takes away from your game score a lot) If they shoot, try to block/contest the shot. If you do it good enough you'll get points regardless the shot going in or missing. Also, if you see someone shoot the ball, you either attack the ball for the rebound, OR sprint to your basket for a fast break layup (call for the pass if your open and a teammate grabbed the rebound) If your team doesn't get the rebound sprint back to cover your guy.

Also, Myplayer is very fun and rewarding once you get into it. It has its moments that suck, but get through the first 10-20 games and you'll get to a point where you really love this mode.

    Hope that helps

Re: Tips for playing as a SG in My Player?

        Hey farhannius,

Just a quick tip (I play PG, so I'm not an expert). I play for the Hornets, so I'm usually moved to SG to play beside Paul, and when I have to play against players like Kobe, Wade, Allen, and other great shooters/drivers, I've learned that one of the most helpful things you can do is double team. If you press LB/L1 and then push B/O (That's the SG button), you'll call the closest teammate to come and double team the man you're defending if he has the ball. 90% of the time he'll lose his dribble and pass out.

Don't do this at the 3-point line though, you'll spread your defense out too much. Instead do it about mid-range so if he passes out your teammate can quickly return to his original man.
        My Teams:

        NHL - Detroit Red Wings
        NFL - New Orleans Saints
        NBA - Toronto Raptors

Re: Tips for playing as a SG in My Player?

@NCAAFBall00 My Player is a PG, and before I became a starter, I played SG from time to time. When I finally became a starter, I stopped playing SG. It could be different from team to team, but from my experience with the Thunder, Westbrook is holding it down.

@farhannius I definitely agree with what Jason said. I would get my mid-range, consistency and shoot off dribble up first (maybe 80/70/80, respectively). I would put some points in OBD (maybe 80) and max out vertical to take care of blocks and rebounds (it's cheap to max out)

Re: Tips for playing as a SG in My Player?

I play the SG and I enjoy it alot... I suggest doing alot of set screens because it gets your team grade up quick plus u can move off the screen and get open 3-pt range/mid range shots, I work on those first. Make your guy quick too so you can move around fast and get open.

Playing guard is really all about your shooting ability. So bring up you mid range and you close and ins for layups and you should be good.

Yea I would advise that you try to keep this two skills close together. Both my spd and quickness are at 90 and I notice a lot more speed and ability to get open for shots better and palying defense easier.

ya both... ability to get down the court faster on fast breaks and back on defense... also quickness would be more for on screens and picks

Re: Tips for playing as a SG in My Player?

i don't like myplayer anymore & have'nt played it for months. But good tips i will give you since my Created guy is a 2 Guard a.k.a. shooting guard:

1)as far as skill points, you should make it a priority to focus on; Shoot off dribble,Mid & 3 pt shot,Consistency,Offensive clutch,& of course to improve your overall greatly work on Offense & Defense awareness.

                        2) What works for me a lot as far as using myplayer in a Game is i tend to look for offensive rebounds a lot for easy 2nd chance points.

                        3) in game easy points most the time for me were coming off screens for an open jumper,If no screens are set & u want the ball run around a few of your teammates to get open enough to get the ball an hit an uncontested jumper...Believe me moving without the ball led me to 400 3 pointers made in 1 season because most of my shots were wide open by creating space.
