To enjoy 2k12, you have to make the CPU more 'stupid'.

Have you noticed when you dribble around the paint the CPU has this 'mirrored' defense, like the cpu will basically automatically and instantly mirror your movements regardless of where you go, which means it's frustratingly difficult to get to the basket for fouls and easy layups.

Another thing, have you noticed how the CPU, even on Pro difficulty will 99% of the time go for the most intelligent shot. Like, they pretty much never make a bad shot, or they never ever go for a shot that they probably shouldn't have. I don't mind a challenge, I welcome it, but it's just so annoying when the CPU plays like in a manner that you can only describe as robotic. I find it SO annoying how the cpu can just drive to the basket like I'm not there, but when I try to do the exact same move as them they instantly mirror my movements so I can't get to the rim. I play pretty good defense, but I'm not so good that I can instantly mirror the opposing players movements, I'm not psychic, and the CPU shouldn't be either, it's just absurd.

So for anyone who can understand what I mean, I have a fix. Simply reduce the Offensive and Defensive awareness of the CPU under attributes to anything under 30. Yep, that low. Instantly I noticed differences. For once Joe Johnson didn't get 17/19 shooting. For once he actually made mistakes. For once I could do a jab step and then go the other way with Kobe and actually successfully get to the rim and draw a foul. Another thing, reduce the CPU's On-Ball Defense sliders. This creates less automated cheese bumping animations when on D. I still lose games and I still win games, but now it all just feels so much more real, authentic and less frustrating.

    EDIT: I play Allstar, Sim.

This has been a huge issue for me, as far as gameplay is concerned. It's frustrating to have the CPU completely lock you down on defense, making it impossible to drive to the basket and then blow by you on offense, while you're playing good defense. I'll definitely try this out.

Another thing, reduce the CPU's On-Ball Defense. This also lessens their cheese defense.

My only real complaint really is how the cpu will magically hit a pass away even if they are facing the complete opposite direction like they have eye's in the back of their heads but other than that I'm getting a great experience and stats with default sliders and settings.

Yep I hear you. Again this is sorted with reducing the Offensive and Defensive Awareness slider. Reduce those sliders and the CPU's on-ball defense slider and you'll be having a much better NBA 2k12 experience.

Download and use these sliders for the PC version.

I use them in Hall of Fame difficulty and I get close, fun and "realistic" games.

Not like JJ would ever make a bad shot selection in real life though! Hmm, no that doesn't seem right...

But yeah, parts of the defense can be frustrating. Not because it makes things hard, because it really doesn't, but it just makes it unrealistic basketball. You can't really open a lane to the basket by doing slick isos, you have to "cheese" to get the opening. That's no fun.

Nah, just lower their hands slider and their play the passing lanes sliders. Those are the only sliders. That's how i play and it's much better, other than that i just use the sim sliders(tweaked a bit).

Yea I changed only those two sliders too. And also toned down their 3 pt and midrange success rates because they can hit 3's all day long. One thing I still have yet to get used to is the amount of blocks in the paint. It's very difficult to take a shot without getting blocked. I have to pump fake a tons of times and hope they will fall for it.

yeah...the CPU defenders are just way too perfect at staying with you...this is fine when the defender is an elite defender, but it seems like every CPU player can just shadow you too well...if you have a mismatch and you are controlling a faster player, the CPU defender should not be able to keep within an inch of you at all times....

the CPU just never makes a mistake on defense - they never slow down or hesitate like a human would...they never guess wrong and move in the wrong direction or plant their feet improperly...they never over compensate by closing out too fast like a real player does. you can never get them off balance. you can't fake them out or drive by them because every CPU player can do that "fast shuffle" so perfectly, even with mediocre defenders...it's just not natural how they can perfectly match your speed and direction no matter what you do.

the way the OP described it is correct - the CPU just perfectly "mirrors" your speed and direction - the CPU obviously has an advantage because it know's what you're doing with the controller, but the game needs to have more built in "human error" factor that causes the CPU to occasionally hesitate or close out too fast... the CPU players in 2k11 gave you too much space, but the players in 2k12 don't give you enough.

the problem is that when the user controls a defender he plants his feet and hesitates before changing direction due to momentum...there is a delay to the directional changes...but the CPU doesn't seem to have these delays...the CPU can change directions so quickly without as much momentum.

yeah 2k12's fun factor is rather low b/c of this. I never thought I'd have fun playing a remake of a game from forever ago (NBA Jam) but it is what it is.

also, I was watchin a Derrick Rose mix last night that had tons of his drives to the rack, blowing by defenders... and somethin that popped in my head was "you sure can't do that in 2k12" smh...

That's a good point. I've seen a lot of guys react to questions of difficult defense by saying "These are NBA players--it's supposed to be hard." But the bottom line is that you should be able to reproduce what you see on the real court. We all know that Derrick Rose drives past defenders routinely, so if you're playing with Derrick Rose, it's reasonable to think you should be able to replicate that.
