Finally figured this game out!
We all know this game is so cheesy and frustrating this time, and by now, I bet we have all experienced a 30-2 run or a 20 point loss to the Timberwolves. I have one word for this. Momentum. It actually plays a role this year. I advise anyone to call a timeout after the computer scores 6 points consecutively. It slows up the game and cools down the AI on offense. This goes vice versa as well. If you end up scoring 6 points straight, keep attacking! More of your shots fall when the momentum is in your direction. Sure you'll still have the cheese of the over reactive collision system, or when the defense even TOUCHES the ball it'll go flying into the cheap seats. But, the game will go in your direction. Fouls will get called your way, threes will splash and blocks will come to you a lot easier. I've moved up 2 difficulty settings since I got the hang of the tempo of teams and the game. Give me some feedback!Tags: None -
Re: Finally figured this game out!
Momentum is surely a factor as well as monitoring when a player hits more than 2 shots consecutively. If you are getting your butt handed to you by the cpu and you finally score, notice how the cpu calls a TO immediately. I believe it is to break any chances of you getting momentum in your favor. My rule is, if the cpu scores 2 to 3 times without me scoring, I need a TO. Problem arrises when you get caught up in the action when you have a big lead and look up and realize the cpu has scored 8 points in a row and has cut your lead to nothing. By then, the cpu has so much momentum, that it's like a runaway frieght train and it's hard to stop. These are my opinions based off of my perspective. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, but if you disagree, we can still agree to disagree agreeably and not fight about it.Comment

I'm just surprised that it plays such a great factor, last year, I'm pretty sure it didn't even exist.Comment

Re: Finally figured this game out!
momentum should be determined by how a player plays not a coded mechanic thats random activatedComment

Re: Finally figured this game out!
It is determined that way..
Example..
Second game of the season, Celtics vs Atlanta, Joe Johnson hit a couple of shots, we had momentum our way, went on a 12-2 run. Celtics make a couple of shots, they have some momentum, went on a 6-0 run.Comment

And that's REAL basketball. It's a game of runs. I think it's a great feature. And yes, it does apply to my player mode! You have to get your whole team involved not just your player because once you get subbed out, the rest of your team is iced offensivelyComment

Re: Finally figured this game out!
My theory for the 3rd quarter runs is that the CPU gets an automatic momentum boost and you a momentum nerf out of the half. How both teams play before and after the halftime break is pretty consistent. Again, artificial.Comment

Re: Finally figured this game out!
Momentum did exist last year, as well as every year as far as I can remember since 2k8. It's always been somewhat heavy handed and just seems especially worse this year. Basketball allows for runs but it's not this extreme, scripted, or predictable. I like that timeouts and tempo kill momentum, but the momentum play is so pronounced and exaggerated this year you feel like you're gaming the momentum system rather than playing against the players on court.

But, it's how you play against the momentum. Calling time outs, fouling at the right times. Free throw shooting, anything you do to slow down the tempo of the game. And that itself, is a good skill to practice. I think it's fun to work against it. It's something else to play against. But, you tell me that you don't feel like it's pretty fun yourself to go on a 30-2 run against the AI?Comment

Re: Finally figured this game out!
I've yet to have that happen. Atlanta vs Celtics, i have a 20 point lead in the third quarter, on superstar, they go on little spurts, but i know when to slow the pace down and call a timeout, and their offense eventually cools down.Comment

I don't actually enjoy knowing the artificial momentum will kick in in full force if I happen to miss a few shots and lapse on defense for a possession or two, or if it's the 3rd quarter, and my players will start moving slow, make bad decisions, blow wide open shots and layups and the AI will start a block fest. It's simply too artificial and pronounced to be believable or enjoyable. I think there should be momentum and it should be nuanced. It shouldn't be a switch that makes everyone on my team, from superstar to scrub, automatically lose their minds. Like I said, I feel more like I'm gaming the system than the collection of players on the court.
The momentum also punishes you for shooting slumps and you simply can't shoot your way out of it like Ray Allen recommends. Even if you work for the easy shot or layup with your star player like you're supposed to to end the slump, it continues to punish you with incredulous misses instead of rewarding you. You miss shots you need to make and should make just because you're down. That breaks believability, fun, and immersion for me. Tone this down, make it more nuanced so it isn't a heavy teamwide nerf, make it affect harder shots with less effect on easy shots, and minimal effect on gimmie shots, and we have a game.Last edited by Sundown; 11-24-2011, 08:00 PM.Comment

There are coaches that let the players play through runs in the NBA. You just cannot do this in 2K.Comment
