Why is there a 5 sig skill limit?

I think that this is a bit ridiculous. If a player can do everything (AKA LeBron), they shouldn't be limited to 5 sig skills. How else do you separate the elite from the good with sig skills? What's the point if Rudy Gay has the same amount of skills as LeBron James? Or any other 'good' player? If a player had no cap on sig skills, it would better represent the NBA. In the NBA, stars are so important and that is not truly recognised with a 5 sig skill limit. Yes, it may be open to cheese, but 2k should fix cheese problems anyway. If LeBron goes off for 30/9/9 online, it's realistic enough anyway/

love how lebron is everyones basis to give players 5+ sig skills. Bottom line is he isnt special and everyone should have the same limit. 5 is enough and they measure the things he does best. Sad thing is people dont even know what skills he has and still they asking for more

Honestly cheesing and sig skills are completely different. 2k can stop cheesing and add more sig skills for players. Tell me whats the difference between Rudy Gay and LeBron if they both have 5 sig skills? Not much right? If LeBron had 15 or so, it would make him play much more realistic in terms of the CPU controlling him.

For example, FIFA has unlimited skill limits I'm pretty sure. Someone like Ronaldo or Messi (92 overall), the true elites, are separated from the other players around 88 overall due to their sig skills and how it represents their skill sets. The same should be in 2k. It would be a travesty if someone like MKG and LeBron both had 5 sig skills with 3 of them overlapping. Where's the separation in talent then? Sig skills are a brilliant idea but the execution is off IMO.

Re: Why is there a 5 sig skill limit?

because no one player really needs more than 5.

as I understand it...the sig skils on their end were a way for them to pinpoint certain things certain players do well without arbitrarily raising the number of a rating.

just because someone can do something, doesn't mean they do it as effectively and efficiently as someone else.

            there must always be moderation...

for the life of me, I just don't get why people are so stuck on a 5 sig skill limitation.

Exactly. The elite players are going to be rated high anyway.

Re: Why is there a 5 sig skill limit?

I would use a guy like Shane Battier as the poster boy for players needing more than 5 sig skills. If it works as advertised it's the prefect tool for utility players. To my understanding sig skill are 2k's way of representing intangible and situational basketball that ratings and tendencies don't do sufficiently. If this is the case than limiting players to 5 is a huge mistake. If sig skills are cheesy and limiting "cheesers" is the ultimate goal sig skills shouldn't be in the game altogether.

Many have pointed out the fact that sig skill can have a perverse effect to cheesing considering all sig skill with the exceptions of a few have requirements to based on real life basketball situations.

Re: Why is there a 5 sig skill limit?

I disagree with the original post's rationale for having unlimited sig skills, but I agree that having a strict limit is kinda weird.

If you could imagine a player who hustles more than Andrew Bynum, dives for loose balls more than Tyler Hansbrough, sets strong picks better than Glen David, draws charges better than Udonis Haslem, bumps more down low than David West, and is less susceptible to cold streaks than Zach Randolph (which seems an odd choice for Anti-Freeze to begin with), he should be awarded all six skills (Hustle Points, Scrapper, Brick Wall, Charge Card, Bruiser, and Anti-Freeze). Capped at an arbitrary limit of 5, he might lose ground in match-ups with those other guys.

No cheese, not a spectacular player, but he deserves the skills he's earned by his non-spectacular but strong play.

It's not meant to differentiate LeBron James from Rudy Gay. The ratings do that. It's meant to differentiate between role players as much as anyone. But in an absolute scale, someone could be exceptional at more than 5 of the identified areas and still be a below-average player.

if you havent noticed in the mycareer trailer, there are 3 levels of each sig skill. so everyone wont be a level 3. its not just about the amount of skills, its also about how good they are at those skills

A fair speculation, however there is no proof that indicates players outside of one`s My Player have those levels.

And Chandlerbang. LeBron is not special....really? Even Skip Bayless would be shaking his head if he saw that. Please educate us with your expertise on what makes a player special.

@Biagas Im not here to bring this off topic but if you don't think Battier is a lockdown kind of guy, your dead wrong. Remember him v Kobe when shane played in Houston? Hell, there even a thread on this very website that has video of Battier locking folks like Kobe down.

Perhaps you can send me a pm with your reason as to why SB isn't a lockdown defender?

I don't understand how LeBron doesn't deserve more than 5 skills.

Moderation? Really? We are talking about one of the most versatile players in NBA History. 5 skills for him is honestly not accurate. He deserves more than 5.

So yes, LeBron will be the example whenever we are discussing this because with as many elite skills he possesses he will be getting short changed.

And PS, just because someone feels LeBron deserves more than 5 doesn't mean they are a cheeser nor does it mean they worship the guy. I am simply a basketball lover and what I see from him is special. He is a special talent.

                              He deserves more than 5.

And yes he deserves a clutch/4th quarter skill. Don't fall for the propoganda of him not being clutch. Stats say otherwise.
