No, you can't play with friends.

To get legends you have to buy a booster pack and get lucky. I've found you only get players from silver and gold packs.

Yeah, I'm also against buying VC. It feels very rewarding when you beat a cheese team with a team that you actually earned. My problem at first was I bought a lot of gold packs at first (got a lot of awesome jerseys though) and didn't get any good players. I've found that when you advance a seed you get a player almost every time.
