I'm not complaining about cheese. It's been part of online games forever. I don't like it, but it is what it is. I'm literally asking for help with the thing people often say in response to a question like this. How do I stop sucking less? What am I doing wrong? It's not that I want to cheese, but I feel like I'm getting outclassed in every way possible and I don't understand why. I understand basketball. I just don't understand NBA2k14.

What am I doing wrong (regarding online play)?
I'm really confused as to how things are going the way they are. The microbumps that cause my passes to be off. The bumps on the way to the hoop that cause chippies to miss. The players who step 3 feet behind the line and because of that extra space they always hit the 3. With LeBron or Channing Frye. Doesn't matter. I feel like there's a style of playing online that I never learned and thus I just can't compete right now. And it's really little stuff. The way the other team's AI gets into passing lanes constantly while my team doesn't. The way the other team seems to always draw a foul and I get bumped just enough to miss the shot, but not enough to draw the foul. I feel like there's an entire school of play that I've failed to learn how to play and that there's no point in bothering with it any longer.

Re: What am I doing wrong (regarding online play)?
Please do. My record is bad. And I'm afraid I've developed some of the same bad habits (driving too much) because of playing against cheesers. I guess I just want this game to be different online when I should probably just stop playing it. But I'd still be willing to play someone in a friendly game and learn. I have the game on 360 and PC.Comment

Your doing it wrong by playing online. Seriously, unless you cheese, you can't win many games.INACTIVEComment

I don't cheese and I lose my fair share. That said, it gives me great satisfaction when I get the rare W with the Grizzlies against the Heat or Thunder.
I play simply to enjoy an adult beverage and take my mind of work. IMO, too many people care if they win or lose. It's supposed to be an escape.Comment

Eh, I guess it's different for different people. I'm to competitive to enjoy losing, I've even restarted whole dynasty modes because of being upset once in the playoffs.I don't cheese and I lose my fair share. That said, it gives me great satisfaction when I get the rare W with the Grizzlies against the Heat or Thunder.

Re: What am I doing wrong (regarding online play)?
This will change. I too was ultra competitive in college athletics and even in my young professional career. When I was in my 30's if my kids lost a game or my favorite college or pro team lost so was the day.
Now I am older than 95% of gamers and realize that getting worked up because the AI misses a shot or someone knows a ridiculous spin move that I can't stop is insanity.
Just wait until your kids can beat you 99 times out of 100 and then video games will get into perspective. My guess is you will learn to enjoy them for the social aspect rather than the competitive aspect.
All that said and it still feel mighty nice when I get that rare W.Comment

Re: What am I doing wrong (regarding online play)?
You can win without cheesing.
I'm 62-72 now. A lot of those losses were because I was trying to get cute and run with the Bobcats, Bucks, Sixers etc.
Now I play with the Knicks or Bulls only. No exceptions and I refuse to play the Thunder or the Heat.
Get a gameplan and stick with it and exploit matchups. For example I just played a guy named a_stoudamire on PS3. Dude was like 48-7 and 35-0 with the Spurs.
And we was the typical hyper steal button masher/ charge guy. I just patiently ran my offense and scored almost on literally every possession. He had Kawhi on Melo so instead of dribbling around with Melo which plays into Leonards hands I just bullied him. Post up after post up and when he brought the double I kicked it out topen shooters.
Then when he tried that cheesy switch thing where they go back and forth with cpu defense over and over I just fake passed and there was nothing he could do. His fear of Melo opened up my whole offense. Made him rage quit and won by 22.
The more I play I see its about strategy. First thing Id do is go into practice mode and master all your players shots. Well before that get a good team. People will say Melo is cheese but I dont give a damn. I mainly use the Knicks for Shumpert.
Same reason I used the Bulls for Jimmy Butler.
Hope this helps:
Find a team that has all these qualities:
1. A shut down defender (Butler, Leonard (lol), Shumpert, George etc. You must have a guy that can absolutely eliminate a guy from the other team. Most likely the star. I put Butler/ Shumpert on the teams best offensive guy every time no exceptions.
2. A defensive minded center that is tall and can block shots. (Chandler, Hibbert, Noah to an extent)
3. Shooters!!! This is the most important. You need shooters in 2k14 period. Atleast 3-4 guys who have 80 ratings or better from three.
4. A power forward that can finish and rebound. (Blake, Boozer, Stoudamire)
and lastly the most important in my opinion and this goes overlooked
5. You MUST have a PG with a high passer rating something atleast 85 or better. The passes are off in this game you need a guy that can zip it to certain spots with the quickness. This also offsets all the lane jumping and steal attempts. (CP3, Felton, Rondo etc)
In your case Id use the Clippers and Clippers only.
DeAndre Jordan- Tall, athletic, rebounder, shot blocker and high dunk rating
Blake- No explanation needed.
CP3-See blake.
After those 3 you can mix and match with Reddick, Collison, Granger, Crawford, Dudley, Barnes and Willie Green even.
Also the best thing about the Clippers is that they are the only team in the game that has 4 guys with an 80 or higher for on ball defense
CP3: 86
Collison:85
Dudley: 83
Barnes: 83
Dudley and Barnes arent the quickest guys but they are great on ball defenders in this game and they are both 6 foot 7. Barnes/Dudley easily can guard wing guys and CP3 /Collison (2 of the fastest and quickest PG's in the whole game) can shut down PG's and some smaller 2's like Ellis.
The Clippers shots atleast for me were hard to get down but maybe they ont be for you. And learn how to use the runner with CP3. It never misses lol.
And when you play those steal button mashers if you can dribble around a bit and get them in the bonus early. I do this all the time now lol. Get those clowns in the bonus and shoot FT's rest of the quarter easy 2 points.
Sorry for the length hope this helps.Last edited by Fakename22; 04-09-2014, 01:55 AM.Comment

Re: What am I doing wrong (regarding online play)?
this is good advice. i use the warriors most of the time and basically use this same strategy against opponents. if my opponent picks a lower rated team, ill be the wizards or sometimes the cavs. ive even been the celtics a couple times. You can win without cheesing.

you will ALWAYS have the random games where the cheese is just too strong and you cant win. it happens sometimes. but for the most part, you can beat the cheese with sound play and a good team that you know how to use. my record is 44-19 with a couple loses coming from disconnections and i also lost my first 2 or 3 games when i first got the game and wasnt used to it yet.Comment
