    Players and retirement

    Hi,
what kind of things factor in a players decision to retire? Any chance to influence the players decision. For instance, I've seen Ginobili retiring after one season, in my other assosiation he played for three more years. Another example is Steve Nash. Any chance he doesn't retire after the first season?

    Re: Players and retirement

Sometimes Nash plays another year, but most often he retires after the first season.

I can't say this is definitely the case, but in most of my associations it seems that if you have a higher OVR rated team, the player will be less likely to retire (probably because they feel they have another shot at a ring).

Another theory I have read is that if the player hasn't yet maxed out his potential he may prolong his career. EX: If you use "untapped potential" (one of the training things available in the offseason that costs 75) on someone like Paul Pierce, his potential rating would increase and he would be more likely to play an extra season or two. I don't know if this is entirely true, but I think I read it somewhere on this forum. If I can find the link I'll post it.

I think it's random, but what i would like to know is whether their contracts stay on the salary cap? I've often had older players re-sign for 4 years only to see them retire the next offseason.

I have always wondered this myself on what factors into a player retiring in the game. I does seem random, so its hard to put a finger on it in this game. I do wish there was a way you could talk them out of it, or in Nash' case talk him into retiring, lol. IRL Nash should have retired a couple years ago.

If a player retires IRL then their contract becomes void, so thats probably the way it works in the game too, or should anyway.

It should, but teams like the Celtics are still paying players like Dana Barros, Lakers and Knicks also paying guys that haven't played in a while either so I'm not 100% sure it's automatically void once they retire.

I'll try to find the link stating this....

Edit: here's a link where guys like Marbury, Shaq and Barros are on the Celtics 2013-2014 payroll (scroll down to the 2nd section)

I dont think those guys retired from the team did they? I could be wrong, I know if a baseball player retires then he loses his contract, I just figured it was like that in any sport, but maybe not.

I don't know if each player specifically retired from the team still paying him, but there has to be cases.

Dana Barros hasn't played in at least 10 years I would guess off the top of my head, and he was on the Celtics payroll just this past season. Marbury has been over seas for years, Shaq hasn't played in at least 2-3 seasons, yet these guys were all on the 13-14 Celtics payroll/cap so they definitely still get paid if there contract didn't expire when they retired (reference the link I posted above).

I know in baseball some teams can get players to defer money to later years, so that could be the case with these guys as well, and why they are still being paid. I think this can be done in basketball too which would make sense considering Dana hasnt played in forever.

Yeah that's my guess.....they can probably come to an agreement with a player that is owed $1mil for example, they pay him $100,000 a year for the next 12 years instead so the team doesn't take the $1mil cap hit all the following year, and the player gets 120% of what's owed to him over time. I believe it actually said Marbury is getting 120% of the remainder of his deal if I read it correctly.

They definitely don't get paid... All this is, is a cap hold. It allows teams to take a percentage of that players salary and hold on to it until they need to dump it or trade it. These players aren't still being paid by the teams.

It's based on OVR and POT mostly. I don't know if how good the team is factors into it but a 99 POT player will play a lot longer than a 50POT player and a high OVR player will play longer as well.
