The AI in ESPN NBA 2k5...

It's hit and miss. But the driving AI and shot selection AI is pretty poor IMHO.

No matter how many times you draw a charge from the player, the team will STILL try to cross you over to get to the basket.

I hate seeing hook shots by guards in the key, also.

You're welcome to tell me your experiences with this problem. Maybe there's something I'm not doing right, or this is a genuine problem that hopefully they fix next year.

I think they gotta work on player tendencies as their current system just isn't very good. I see way too many players stubbornly trying to drive into the paint just because their inside scoring raitng is high.

Agree too... but it's the best thing we have in a basketball game...
I could WAY back up from a 3pt shooter and he's still trying to look for space to drive

Id 2004's is much better, IMHO. I like ESPN NBA 2k5. It's pretty good. But they REALLY need to work on the AI next year. And fix the stat tracking bugs.

And I'd like it if they allowed for charges if a player runs into another player. They shouldn't just have charges and blocking fouls when a player is trying to cross another player over.

This game can be really fun at times, but it can also be incredibly frustrating.

Re: The AI in ESPN NBA 2k5...

I think it's pretty unanimous that the AI does not take enough outside shots, be they midrange or 3 pointers. If you back off to give a man a lot of space, he won't just pull up for the shot, even with terrific shooters. Very disappointing there. But, if you leave your man to pressure somebody else or try to intercept a pass, then you'll see how quickly your man gets near the basket and they pass right to him for some inside shot/dunk.

They don't work an inside-out game either if they have a powerful big man like Shaq. They just kind of wander around, looking for some wide open guy, or having the guard try to drive it in foolishly.

To be fair, the AI offense does a good job of setting screens and picks on offense, which is nice, it's just that they don't execute after them. They need to set a screen, roll the SG around it, catch a pass and pull up for a quick shot. This is such a standard NBA play, but I've yet to see it done well in any basketball game.

And on AI defense, I've noticed they start to double up on the hot player, which is smart. Like when TMAC started to get near 40 in one of my games just about every time I passed to him they'd surround him to tie him up, which left a guy open every time to pass to for a quick shot but still kept TMAC from just torching them for like 60.

Man Neo, you are pretty picky when it comes to video games. You are always on here starting a new thread of what you don't like. I think the game plays pretty damn realistic in my opinion. Yes the time out thing is a problem, but possibly it will get fixed. I just think you should concentrate on the positives of the game before you die of a heat attack or something. I gurantee you in this decade you will not find a video game that you like more than you dislike, its just the way of the industry. They will never have a complete sim in any game. The things people complain about though are pretty damn funny!

They need player tendencies, but I think the problem is in the ratings and I believe that the player shot tendencies are based on the ratings. The problem is that too many people have higher close shot ratings compared to their other shot ratings which can lead to them wanting to get inside a lot. I think the closer you can get to take a shot the better, but I also see what you are saying(certainly not all the time though).

I created Donta Smith(ATL) and James Jones(IND) last night and watched them play one on one street(set to sim, all-star, fouls). Based on their player profiles that I found on some draft website, Smith is more of an attacker of the rim and Jones is more of a shooter. By making Smith's close, dunk/layup ratings higher than his mid range and 3pt-he looked to attack the basket and settle for the j when contained. Jones looked to shoot from the perimeter more due to his mid range and 3pt being higher than his close,dunk/layup. He still drove at times but looked to create space more and set up for a J.

Therefore, I think the tendencies are there somewhat in the form of ratings, but these ratings make for the weird shooting decisions we see at times imo. I still love this game, but I see your side as well.
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.
