NBA LIVE ‘19 “guard ball” button

Has anyone else been using the “guard ball” button? Its the LB button on xbox 1, and is probably the L1 button on ps4.

It seems to work well in the open court or perimeter, while LT (defensive assist) works well when defending the paint or when you are trying to trap the ball handler.

I haven't used LB to guard the ball as I honestly don't see the purpose of it when I can shade towards the ball handler manually. LT is kind of up and down. I'm used to the "defensive assist" from NBA 2K where if you hold down LT you automatically contest. For Live, I'm honestly not sure what it does.

It works ok in a zone D, but outside that, not seeing a need for it. If someone else can elaborate the need for it, let me know a use case please.

I thought it just switched defensive assignments to you guarding the ball handler.

I’ve found that L1/LB can also function as an aggressive closeups [I mean to say “aggressive closeouts”—ed.] whereas L2/LT is kind of like defensive crouch.

I have a stretch four who’s a killer 3PT shooter, but frankly a very mediocre defender, and I’ve found the occasional, judicious use of L1/LB helps him to contest drives and bigs better.

it will if you are off the ball (the league mode); however, if you are constantly switching players (franchise mode), i'd go so far as in saying that it keeps you in front of the ball handler with a decreased chance of being ankle broken. You can hold the button down and it will act as "auto d", but it still gives you freedom to move your defender in tighter. It helps me square up on a quick ball handler in the open court , and is excellent when implementing full court pressure. Once I get squared up, I usually go with a mixture of defensive assist and/or manual defense.

Tried it out last night and was very noticeable. Definitely allowed tighter pressure and a faster closeout and if I moved well was more likely to force a pickup.

The Y contest button being more responsive in these situations would help with this a lot. Is there a penalty for moving shots in Live? Seems guys can pull up for momentum 3's without much regard..

No doubt Live relies on skill more than ratings, and probably needs a tuning update.

But one thing I will say is that I hate that it becomes impossible to hit moving shots on other games. Yes there should be a slight penalty but people make shots slightly moving all the time in the NBA.... There's also a difference between slightly moving in transition, which has been punished in the past by games to be the same as any moving shot, and other movement

Pull ups in transition, mid range jimbo, sure.

but theres a very small % of players hitting or even attempting full speed dribble pull up 3's regularly. Hopefully they can tune it

EDIT: My mistake, thought this was the contested shots thread, lol

Still a solid point. In live one of the best things is the speed of the game end to end. It feels real. The tuning only needs to be done imo for Maxed backcourt Shooters. And just tune it percentage wise. They still gotta be able to hit them because of the way the game is balanced but it should not be a really good shot. It should be at best a 50 50 shot at max bar max rating.

Glad you are enjoying the speed of the game, Smak.

I'm more concerned with guys moving back and forth laterally at the top of the key until they spot some room and pulling up for a momentum three.

I'm a post anchor trying to defend here so I'm obviously outmatched but some kind of fatigue from doing this would maybe curb some of this "offense"

It is concerning. Zig zag is an always has been garbage. How do u defend that hmm. Post anchor is tough, I got a 6 9 one w 70 speed Hakeem icon and I can't stop it well. It's about key stops really like I said in another thread. Also if you lay off l2 and turbo and really use the stick lightly. Like I said those guys imo have done that so much that they aren't thinking, they are like in a trance so play back and to the center. Also body them before they get the ball.

It happens and it's a flaw. Not sure why if I cross super hard at the wrong time the ball dribbles off my foot but they can do that without losing it. My 6 4 pip would eat that guy tho esp in 3s. Imo Tru bigs are trash in 3s. Because of stuff like that. It's like having to check a pure sharp w a 7 3 not to mention it's 1s and 2s.

It is what It is, it's actually harder to stop in 5v5 cuz reach fouls but there can be help and you can actually impact the game as a big. Not just half of points. That guy was what a max height wing shooter, wing scorer or stretch? I've seen post anchors play the same way except driving. But when faced w a wing defender they might get some but they can't do it as easy. I'd pretty much always want a wd as my c in 3s, given how my 6 4 guy rebs and blocks a lil height would be better. But not too tall cuz then you end up falling all over yourself.

In 3s tho the best solution is take the ball from them when they are trying to sauce you. It's hard to impact those shots. But staying neutral and realizing that in their trance it usually takes them a sec to figure out when they have space might allow you to close.

Also it's true that hands up doesn't mean much but it does for a sec. I mean I've played live and gotten impacted shots off rs up contests but it's like a button press. Its not infinite like 2k. So rs up contest at the right moment is a good contest imo. Tapping jump is also. Blocking em works too. All are possible if you're close, but that tactic of Zig zag is rampant and I don't wanna cry for a patch as much as put our heads together to stop it.

It offends me when people play games like that. It's such a joke like why even play. It's Def not the worst cheese I've ever seen tho but it's cheesy. Just gotta get experienced enough to where you can throw them off a little, but Yea I'd bring up a wing defender. Post scorer is BBQ on perimeter cuz u can't steal either.

My ideal is getting enough people to play private gms. I got enough for private 3s prol but not 5s. Will probably soon (master recruiter haha)
